A landscape shaped by water and oak

Smedstad Utmark is a compact yet varied reserve centred on a shallow brook and a network of small ponds and wet meadows. The site’s character comes from the contrast between open grassland, reed beds and veteran oak trees that punctuate the plains; these oaks and the parkland-like clearings give the reserve a warm, late-summer glow and a strong seasonal identity. Restored stretches of Smedstadsbäcken (the local stream) and re-created wetland edges are visible across the reserve and are key habitats for aquatic plants, amphibians and wading birds.
