Origins in Scandal and Nobility

Sparreholm's story begins in the 17th century when the estate, originally known as Hyltingenäs, came under the Sparre family around 1580. In 1632, landshövding Göran Bengtsson Sparre built the first manor, renaming it Sparreholm in 1643 after himself. His marriage to a non-noble farmhand, Anna Joensdotter, sparked scandal; upon his death in 1657, their children could not inherit due to her status, passing the property to his brother's widow.The estate remained with Sparre descendants for a century, evolving through noble hands amid Sweden's great power era.

Baroque Splendor Emerges

In 1757, wealthy widow Ulrika Charlotta Taube acquired Sparreholm and soon married Johan Vilhelm Sprengtporten. They demolished the wooden structure for a grand stone manor completed in 1763, designed by architect Jean Eric Rehn. Wings, a formal garden, avenue, and orangery followed under Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz, creating a baroque ensemble by Lake Båven's shores.Renovations in the 1820s added Empire style interiors, blending elegance with the surrounding oak groves and gentle hills.

1890s Transformation and Modern Touches

Sold multiple times in the late 19th century, Sparreholm reached Emil Dickson in 1893. He commissioned architect Johan August Westerberg for major alterations, including the rooftop dome and hanging towers, defining its current silhouette. Later owners repurposed it as a retreat and nursing home before decline.In 1996, the Karinen family revived it, restoring buildings, converting outbuildings to museums, and establishing an equestrian center amid the park's serene landscapes.

Museums of Bygone Eras

Sparreholm houses exceptional collections: the automobile museum displays 65 vintage cars from the late 1800s, including a rare 1936 Mercedes 540K once owned by Prince Gustaf Adolf. Jukebox, bicycle, and carriage museums trace transportation and entertainment evolution, offering glimpses into daily life changes over decades.These exhibits fill historic wings, surrounded by the estate's parklike grounds.

Overlooking Hyltingeviken on Lake Båven—Sörmland's largest with 365 islands—the castle basks in a soft, undulating terrain of meadows and ancient oaks.
