The Högvaktsavlösningen traces its roots to 1523, when Gustav Vasa was proclaimed king and assigned 100–200 soldiers to guard the royal residence, also handling city order and firefighting. This evolved into a formal guard at Kungliga Slottet, blending military duty with ceremonial pomp. Today, it remains a vital part of protecting the royal family and maintaining Stockholm's defense readiness.

Ceremonial Precision and Schedule

The changing of the guard occurs daily at the palace's outer courtyard on Storkyrkobrinken. Weekdays and Saturdays feature the parade at 12:15, shifting to 13:15 on Sundays and holidays. During summer, mounted guards from Livgardet join, marching from Kavallerikasern via city streets like Stureplan and Norrbro, arriving with stirring brass signals or full military bands.

Summer Spectacle with Horses and Music

From April through early autumn, the event amplifies with Beridna Högvakten—soldiers on horseback—and musikkårer from various regiments. Paths wind through central Stockholm, passing landmarks before culminating at Slottsbacken. Special dates like National Day (June 6) adjust timings for salutes, while state visits add grenadier guards in bearskin shakos and dragoons in historical uniforms.

Livgardet's Enduring Role

Livgardet, founded in 1521 and linked to Gustav Vasa's original protectors, mans the guard primarily in summer. Soldiers train for urban combat alongside parade duties, serving at both Stockholm and Drottningholm palaces. King Carl XVI Gustaf holds honorary command, inspecting forces during major events like Riksmötets opening.
