History of Zurich West

Industrial Beginnings beside the Limmat

The area that became Zurich West developed beyond the historic city as Zurich expanded during industrialisation. Its position beside the Limmat and close to railway infrastructure made it suitable for factories, workshops, storage yards and transport-related activity. The Escher Wyss engineering company became particularly important to the district's industrial identity, with large-scale manufacturing associated with the western side of Zurich. Rather than an old residential quarter, this was a productive landscape of machinery, workers and service businesses on the edge of the growing city.

Railways, Workshops and Urban Expansion

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, railway construction and improved urban connections strengthened Zurich West's role as an industrial and commercial zone. The railway viaduct, completed in the 1890s, helped organise movement through the district while separating and connecting the surrounding streets. Factory buildings, depots and workers' housing grew around this infrastructure, and the quarter remained closely linked to manufacturing long after central Zurich had become more heavily residential and commercial. The surviving industrial scale of the streets and buildings still reflects this period.

Decline of Heavy Industry

From the later twentieth century, changes in manufacturing and the relocation or reduction of industrial operations left large sites and buildings available for new uses. Zurich West did not transform overnight: workshops, depots and modest businesses continued alongside vacant or underused premises. Gradually, artists, cultural organisations, independent businesses and nightlife operators began occupying some of the available spaces. This transitional period established the district's reputation for experimentation and adaptive reuse, while also creating tensions over land values and the future of a formerly industrial part of the city.

Regeneration and the Contemporary Quarter

The early twenty-first century brought major redevelopment, including offices, housing, retail and cultural projects on former industrial land. The Viadukt arches were adapted for small businesses, the Löwenbräu site became a centre for art and architecture, and Schiffbau gave a former industrial building a prominent cultural role. Completed in 2011, the Prime Tower became a visible sign of Zurich West's commercial rise. The result is a mixed district rather than a preserved industrial museum: older structures, new construction, creative activity and everyday residential life now occupy the same urban space.
