Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Mwanza city center and head southeast on the B1 highway towards the town of Nyamagana. Continue on the B1 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the turnoff for the A104 road towards Ngara. Turn onto the A104 and drive for about 50 kilometers. Look for signs directing you towards the Retima Hippo Pool; you will have to turn off the main road onto a dirt track that leads directly to the pool. The last stretch may require careful driving as the road can be bumpy. Make sure to have a GPS or mobile map application handy for navigation.
Public Transportation
To reach Retima Hippo Pool using public transportation, start from Mwanza. Take a daladala (local minibus) heading towards Nyamagana. The fare is typically around TZS 1,000 - TZS 2,000. After arriving at Nyamagana, you will need to transfer to another daladala heading towards Ngara, which may cost around TZS 2,500. Once you get off the daladala, you will need to hire a local taxi or arrange for a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) to take you the remaining distance to the Retima Hippo Pool. Be sure to negotiate the fare in advance; it should be around TZS 5,000 - TZS 10,000 depending on your negotiation skills.
Walking
If you are in close proximity to Retima Hippo Pool, you may choose to walk the last part of your journey. From the nearest daladala drop-off point, follow the signs leading to the pool. The area is generally safe for walking, but be sure to stay aware of your surroundings. It’s about a 30-minute walk on a dirt path, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water, especially if it’s a hot day.
