History of Cankaya

From Vineyard Slopes to Çankaya

Before Ankara expanded southwards, the hills associated with Çankaya were characterised by rural land, gardens and vineyards rather than dense urban construction. The name became nationally significant through the Çankaya Mansion, which Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used as a residence and political headquarters after the establishment of the Republic. As Ankara developed into the new capital during the 1920s and 1930s, roads, public buildings and residential areas gradually connected these elevated slopes with the older city centre. Çankaya consequently became associated not simply with a place, but with the institutions and political culture of republican Ankara.

The Capital Moves South

The growth of the Republic’s ministries, diplomatic missions and professional classes transformed Çankaya during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Apartment buildings, embassies, schools and commercial avenues spread across Kavaklıdere, Ayrancı, Kızılay and neighbouring quarters, replacing much of the earlier low-density landscape. Large boulevards such as Atatürk Boulevard helped link administrative Ankara with the southern districts, while new public spaces gave the expanding capital a more formal urban image. The district’s mixed population of civil servants, students, diplomats and established Ankara families shaped the cosmopolitan everyday life still associated with central Çankaya.

Memorial Ankara Takes Shape

The construction of Anıtkabir on Rasattepe, completed in 1953, added a monumental and commemorative focus to Çankaya. Its hilltop setting and ceremonial architecture made it one of the most important symbols of the Republic, while the surrounding district continued to develop through housing, education and government functions. In later decades, Kocatepe Mosque became another defining element of the central skyline, and parks such as Kuğulu Park and Seğmenler Parkı offered landscaped counterpoints to the expanding apartment city. These sites reflect different strands of Ankara’s public identity: republican remembrance, religious life and ordinary urban recreation.

A Broad Contemporary District

From the late twentieth century onwards, Çankaya grew into one of Ankara’s most extensive and varied municipal districts. Retail and nightlife concentrated along Kızılay, Tunalı Hilmi, Bestekar and Bahçeli avenues, while higher southern areas such as Oran acquired newer apartment complexes, offices and shopping facilities. Atakule, opened in 1989, became a prominent marker of this changing skyline. Redevelopment has brought taller buildings and new commercial patterns, although older apartment streets, diplomatic compounds and established parks remain important to the district’s character. Today Çankaya combines the historic symbolism of the capital with the routines of a large, evolving urban community.
