History of Kavaklidere

From Rural Edge to Central District

Before Ankara’s twentieth-century expansion, the area associated with Kavaklıdere lay beyond the compact historic core in a landscape of gardens, streams and cultivated land. The name is generally understood as referring to a poplar-lined watercourse, reflecting the rural character of the wider setting. As the capital developed after the establishment of the Republic in 1923, new roads and residential areas extended south and west from the old city. Kavaklıdere gradually became part of this expanding central urban fabric, rather than remaining an outlying agricultural landscape.

The Capital’s Expanding Boulevard

The construction and widening of major avenues through Çankaya helped turn Kavaklıdere into a prominent central district during the Republican period. Atatürk Boulevard connected key parts of Ankara and encouraged apartment construction, offices, diplomatic premises and public institutions along its route. Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi developed as an important commercial street, giving the neighbourhood a stronger everyday urban identity. The resulting district reflected the capital’s planned growth: broad thoroughfares and formal buildings were combined with residential streets, local businesses and planted public spaces.

Kavaklıdere as a Cultural Name

The Kavaklıdere name gained a national association through the Kavaklıdere winery, founded in Ankara in 1929 by Cenap And. The company’s history belongs to the development of modern Turkish wine production, while its name also became identified with the wider Ankara district. This association should not be confused with the neighbourhood’s entire identity: contemporary Kavaklıdere is principally a dense urban area of Çankaya, shaped by commerce, diplomacy, professional life and cultural institutions rather than by vineyards or rural production.

A Mature Urban Neighbourhood

From the later twentieth century onwards, Kavaklıdere matured into one of central Ankara’s established mixed-use areas. Apartment blocks, embassies, offices, cafés and specialist shops occupied land that had once stood nearer the city’s edge, while Kuğulu Park remained an important public meeting place. Cultural organisations and international institutions strengthened the district’s outward-looking character. In recent decades, changing rents, redevelopment and the growth of cafés and restaurants have altered parts of the commercial landscape, but the neighbourhood still retains a recognisable blend of diplomatic, residential, cultural and everyday city life.
