Castle Toward, dating from the 15th century, served as the ancestral seat of Clan Lamont, a powerful family in western Scotland. The Lamonts’ influence waned after the massacre, and the ruined castle was eventually sold in the early 19th century, with the family relocating to Ardlamont.

The surrounding estate features a designed landscape of approximately 150 hectares, including walled gardens, ornamental rock gardens, and burnside walks. The 19th-century mansion and estate improvements reflect the wealth generated by industrial Glasgow merchants.
