Discover more about Castle Toward
Legacy of Clan Lamont and Architectural Remains
Castle Toward, dating from the 15th century, served as the ancestral seat of Clan Lamont, a powerful family in western Scotland. The castle's ruins today include substantial remains such as a courtyard with foundations of former buildings, a tower, and a vaulted basement hidden beneath the structure. The castle’s architecture reflects its origins as a fortified keep, later expanded with domestic ranges and a bailey in the 17th century. Nearby stands Castle Toward mansion, a grand 19th-century castellated house designed by David Hamilton, built for Glasgow merchant Kirkman Finlay, adding a layer of Victorian and Edwardian heritage to the estate. The 1646 Siege and the Dunoon Massacre
Castle Toward’s history is marked by one of Scotland’s most tragic clan conflicts. In 1646, during the turbulent Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the rival Clan Campbell laid siege to the castle. Despite a negotiated surrender guaranteeing safe passage, the Campbells betrayed their terms, massacring over 200 Lamont men, women, and children. Many captives were killed brutally—some hanged from trees, others buried alive—events collectively known as the Dunoon Massacre. Sir John Lamont, the clan chief, was imprisoned for five years, while the castle was burned and left in ruins. This dark episode contributed to the eventual execution of the Marquis of Argyll for his role in the atrocities.Royal Connections and Clan Alliances
Castle Toward also holds royal significance, having hosted Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1563. The castle was a center for clan alliances and politics, including a 1579 agreement between the Lamonts and the McDonalds. Its strategic location on the Cowal peninsula made it a key stronghold in regional power struggles. The Lamonts’ influence waned after the massacre, and the ruined castle was eventually sold in the early 19th century, with the family relocating to Ardlamont. The Estate Landscape and Later Uses
The surrounding estate features a designed landscape of approximately 150 hectares, including walled gardens, ornamental rock gardens, and burnside walks. The 19th-century mansion and estate improvements reflect the wealth generated by industrial Glasgow merchants. In the 20th century, the estate served as an outdoor education center before being sold to private owners in 2016. Despite some decline, the site retains significant archaeological and architectural value, protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.Visitor Experience and Atmosphere
Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins of Castle Toward, absorbing the poignant history amid scenic views of the Firth of Clyde. The juxtaposition of medieval ruins and Victorian architecture offers a unique glimpse into Scotland’s layered past. The estate’s natural beauty and historical depth provide a contemplative experience for those interested in clan heritage, architecture, and tragic Scottish history.Preservation and Cultural Significance
Castle Toward remains a symbol of resilience and remembrance for Clan Lamont and Scottish history. Its preservation as a ruin and the maintenance of the estate landscape underscore its cultural importance. The site is managed with respect for its heritage, inviting reflection on the complex narratives of loyalty, betrayal, and survival that shaped the region.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
