Historic mill setting

MillWorks occupies the listed Newnham Mill, an L-shaped grey gault-brick building constructed after the 1853 fire that destroyed the earlier structure. The three-storey mill stands beside the millpond on Newnham Road, with a restored working waterwheel as the dining-room centrepiece. Exposed brick, sash windows and the original sack hoist remain visible inside the modern brasserie fit-out. The site has been a mill since the medieval period and continued commercial milling until around 1910 before later industrial and restaurant uses.

Menu and service style

The kitchen uses a charcoal oven for steaks, fish and sharing plates. Typical dishes include small plates from £7.50, vegetarian mains around £17, fish mains near £26 and charcoal steaks £29.50–£35.50. Sunday roasts and set lunch menus are offered. Full table service operates with call switches at each table. The bar stocks cocktails, wine and local cask ale. A children’s menu is available and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are marked.

Indoor and outdoor spaces

The main dining room accommodates roughly 130 covers with a private room for up to 48. The seasonal waterside terrace sits at the millpond edge and cannot be reserved. Air conditioning runs throughout the interior. Background music plays at moderate volume. The atmosphere is relaxed yet professional, with river views from many tables.

Practical access

The restaurant lies a 5–8 minute walk from Silver Street and Queens’ College. Walking routes are flat and paved. Buses stop within 150 m on Newnham Road. On-street parking is available nearby with free evening and Sunday periods; Lammas Land car park lies five minutes away. The rear entrance provides ramped wheelchair access; the main door has two deep steps. Blue Badge parking at the rear requires prior arrangement.

Visitor rhythm and facilities

Most guests book for lunch or dinner lasting 1.5–2.5 hours. The venue suits couples, families, groups and walkers combining a meal with punting next door. Standard and accessible toilets, baby change and cloakroom facilities are provided. Dogs are welcome indoors when booked in advance. The restaurant operates year-round; terrace use depends on weather.
