Fancett's: Compact French Bistro on Cambridge's Mill Road

Setting and atmosphere

Fancett's sits in a compact former tattoo studio on the busy local high street of Mill Road. The deep-green painted unit lies between Taank Optometrists and Al Amin, close to the railway bridge on the Petersfield side. Inside, the space is small and simple with paintings, booth seating at the rear and dim lighting that creates a conversational, grown-up tone. Tables are limited to groups of four or fewer in the main room. The separate Scullery private dining room accommodates up to eight by email booking only. No outdoor seating exists. The surrounding street mixes independent shops, estate agents and food businesses with steady bike and pedestrian traffic.

Menu and service

The restaurant operates a prix-fixe format only. Lunch typically provides two choices per savoury course and runs from 12:00 to 16:00. Dinner expands to around four starters, four mains and four desserts from 18:00 to 23:00. Menus change daily according to produce availability. Signature items that recur include twice-baked cheddar soufflé and pear tarte Tatin. Wine, cocktails and beer are offered at table. Front-of-house service receives consistent praise for warmth and informality. No bar area exists for waiting; early arrivals are directed to nearby pubs such as the Cambridge Blue or Kingston Arms.

History and ownership

Dan and Holly Fancett previously operated North Street Bistro in Burnham Market, Norfolk. After that lease ended they chose Cambridge's Mill Road for its independent neighbourhood character rather than the university or riverside circuit. The restaurant opened in late 2021. It uses classic French technique with British seasonal ingredients and has earned a Michelin Guide recommendation for 2026 plus inclusion in The Good Food Guide 100 Best Local Restaurants for 2025.

Practical access

The restaurant lies an eight-minute walk from Cambridge railway station. From the city centre the flat route along Parkside and Mill Road takes 15–25 minutes. Stagecoach route 2 stops at Gwydir Street, a short walk from the door. The Gwydir Street public car park opposite offers 38 spaces with charges applying Monday to Saturday 08:00–18:00. Evening and Sunday parking is free. Street parking nearby is restricted. Cycling is practical with bike racks opposite the restaurant.

Visitor considerations

Bookings open 60 days ahead and require card details. Cancellation within 24 hours incurs the two-course price. Under-12s are not admitted at dinner. Vegetarian options appear on every dinner menu; vegan requests need at least one week's notice and are limited. The small room fills quickly on weekends and during university term or graduation periods. Walk-ins are not accepted at peak times. Cash is not accepted.
