Riverside Position and Physical Setting

The hotel stands at the cul-de-sac end of Mill Lane with a long frontage onto the River Cam. On one side the town ends abruptly; on the other, lawn, willows and the open meadows of Coe Fen begin. The restaurant looks straight across water to passing punts, ducks, swans and grazing cattle. Indoor rooms include a river-facing dining area with open kitchen, a large oval Garden Bar and a private dining room for up to 16. Outside, a terrace and grass garden hold tables and deckchairs. The scale is that of a medium hotel restaurant rather than a large hall.

History of the Site

A small hotel known first as Belle-Vue and later as the Garden House occupied the riverside plot from the 1910s. It was destroyed by fire in the early 1970s and rebuilt in brick. Graduate Hotels took over the 148-room property in 2021, gutted the interior and created the present restaurant around an open grill. The name Garden House was retained so local people would still recognise the location. The building now operates as Graduate by Hilton Cambridge.

Menu and Daily Rhythm

Lunch and dinner follow à la carte or sharing “Taste of Garden House” menus. Weekday set menus appear periodically. Afternoon tea runs from midday to 5 pm and Sunday roast is offered when scheduled. The open grill produces steaks, fish and vegetables cooked over fire. Starters range from snacks to larger plates; mains centre on seasonal British produce. Cocktails and wine are served in the Garden Bar. A typical meal lasts 1.5 to 2.5 hours; a drink or tea stop can finish in under an hour.

Outdoor Garden and Seasonal Use

The lawn and terrace are the main draw from May to September when weather permits. Deckchairs and tables are placed on the grass. Outdoor seating operates on a first-come basis and closes in rain or strong wind. In winter the experience moves indoors to the bar and restaurant, where large windows still frame the river. Clear days bring the best views of punts and the college skyline beyond the Mathematical Bridge.

Access on Foot, by Bike and by Car

The site is a five- to ten-minute flat walk from King’s College and Market Square. Cambridge station is 1.2 miles away; the walk takes 25–30 minutes or a short taxi ride. The hotel provides complimentary bikes to guests. On-site parking holds 120–140 cars with EV charging; charges apply after two free hours. City driving is discouraged and the road is a dead end with no through traffic.

Practical Facilities and Accessibility

Restrooms include a wheelchair-accessible toilet. The restaurant, bar and garden are stated to be fully accessible with lifts and level paths. Assistance dogs are welcome. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available; advance notice helps with dietary requests. The hotel is dog-friendly with fees, though indoor restaurant pet policy is not confirmed. Families, couples, business groups and solo travellers all use the space; the atmosphere remains hotel-polished rather than casual park dining.
