The Building and Its Setting

The Architect stands at 43 Castle Street on the only noticeable slope in central Cambridge. The 1937 mock-Tudor façade with herringbone brick faces Shire Hall and the Castle Hill car park. Inside, a single-level bar and dining room have been modernised while retaining the original scale of a city pub. A small partly covered courtyard opens at the rear. The street forms part of the Castle and Victoria Road Conservation Area and lies among older pubs, St Giles’ and St Peter’s churches, and the Museum of Cambridge. Castle Mound, the visible remnant of the Norman castle, sits a short walk away.

Menu Structure and Choices

The kitchen operates a customisable format rather than fixed plates. From the fryer, diners choose a main such as cod, haddock, halloumi or vegan banana-blossom, then select a batter (beer, seaweed-and-lemon, gluten-free or vegan), side (mushy peas, minted peas, samphire or slaw), and sauce, served with hand-cut chips. From the oven, options include steak-and-ale or chicken-ham-hock-and-leek pies with potato style and sauce. Sharing snacks such as Scotch eggs and whitebait, plus a children’s menu, complete the range. Real ales from Everards, craft beers, ciders, over twenty gins and a short wine list accompany meals. Most guests arrive for a sit-down meal rather than a quick circuit. Table service begins with drinks, followed by menu selection and plating. The room can grow loud when full; booking is recommended at peak times. Meals last one to two hours, with some extending into drinks. Takeaway remains available throughout opening hours. The experience suits casual dining, dietary needs including gluten-free and vegan, and groups mixing locals and visitors. No fine-dining formality or nightclub energy applies.

History of the Site

Castle Street follows the Roman road line on Castle Hill, the oldest settled part of Cambridge. The address has hosted a pub for more than a century, previously the White Swan and later the County Arms. The present building dates from 1937. After refurbishment it reopened as The Architect in 2014 and again in 2017 under local owners, introducing the current fish-and-chip and pie-and-mash concept. The venue forms part of regular Castle Hill pub crawls yet remains outside the primary college tourist flow.

Access and Transport

Walking from the Round Church area takes about ten minutes uphill; from King’s Parade roughly fifteen minutes. From the station the walk covers 1.6 miles and takes around thirty minutes. Buses including the Busway A stop within minutes at Castle Street or Shire Hall. Taxis from the station or centre take five to eight minutes. The large Castle Hill car park lies directly opposite with 111 spaces, EV chargers and Blue Badge bays. Street parking nearby is restricted. The venue records Easy Access once on Castle Street.

Timing, Crowds and Practical Notes

The pub operates Tuesday to Sunday from noon, closing between 22:00 and 23:30 depending on the day, with Monday closure fixed. Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday lunch and university term periods bring the highest numbers. Weekday lunchtimes stay quieter. The courtyard sees use in fair weather; indoor seating and fireplace remain primary year-round. Wheelchair access covers the main level with a large accessible toilet. Dogs are permitted. No visitor centre or lockers exist; facilities comprise standard pub seating, highchairs and free Wi-Fi.
