Castle Coole stands as one of Ireland’s finest neo-classical country houses, designed by the eminent architect James Wyatt in the 1790s. Built to impress, the mansion features sumptuous Regency interiors including the grand oval Saloon and a State Bedroom created for King George IV’s visit. The house’s elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship reflect the wealth and status of the Earls of Belmore, who have shaped the estate’s history through generations.

A unique feature is the dimly lit underground servants’ tunnel, built to discreetly connect the mansion to the Grand Yard and farm buildings, allowing staff to move unseen while maintaining the smooth running of the household.

Surrounding the mansion is a vast 700-acre estate of landscaped parkland and mature woodland that slopes gently down to Lough Coole. The grounds include the Beech Wood Walk, a tranquil path through ancient beech, oak, and Scots pine trees, some of the oldest in the park. Visitors can also enjoy scenic lakeside strolls and views of Topped Mountain, making the estate ideal for nature lovers and family outings.

Castle Coole’s landscape holds evidence of earlier historic houses dating back to the early 17th century, including earthworks and remnants of formal gardens such as a sunken bowling green and ornamental canals. The estate also features the Grand Yard, stables, dairy, laundry house, and an ice house, all contributing to the understanding of the estate’s operational history.

The house is open for guided tours from March to October, with conservation work closing it during winter months. Tours last about one hour and require booking upon arrival. The estate provides a café with sit-in and takeaway options, picnic areas, restrooms, and ample parking. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds and gardens, enhancing the estate’s family-friendly atmosphere.
