The South East Tower is a significant remnant of Great Yarmouth’s medieval town walls, which are the second best preserved in England. The walls were authorized in 1261 by King Henry III to protect the town with a moat and ditch. The defensive structure originally stretched over 2,280 yards, rising more than 23 feet, and included 10 gates and 16 towers.
