Discover more about Leighton House
A Unique Home and Studio of a Victorian Master
Leighton House Museum was the residence and working studio of Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896), one of the leading Victorian artists and President of the Royal Academy of Arts. Designed by architect George Aitchison RA in 1865-66, the house was custom-built to serve both as a private home and a showcase for Leighton's extensive art collection and refined artistic taste. Over the thirty years Leighton lived here, the house was progressively adapted to his specifications, culminating in a rich artistic environment where he created many of his mature works. The Stunning Arab Hall and Artistic Interiors
The highlight of the museum is the spectacular Arab Hall, completed in 1877, which reflects Leighton's fascination with Middle Eastern art and culture. The hall features a magnificent golden dome, intricate mosaics, and walls lined with authentic 15th-century Damascus tiles, creating an atmosphere of opulence and exotic beauty. The interiors of the house are furnished in period style, offering visitors an immersive experience of Victorian artistic luxury and craftsmanship.Leighton's Studio and Art Collection
Upstairs, the artist's vast north-facing studio remains one of the most remarkable features of the house. Designed with a large picture slot in the wall and a great north window to provide ideal natural lighting, this space was where Leighton produced many of his iconic paintings, including the famous "Flaming June." The museum houses a permanent collection of Victorian paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Leighton and his contemporaries such as Burne-Jones, Millais, Stevens, and Alma-Tadema, alongside the Cecil French Bequest.Preserving Victorian Legacy and Cultural Heritage
Leighton House Museum is unique among London’s museums for combining the intimacy of a private home with an exceptional collection of Victorian art. It offers insight into the artistic and social life of late 19th-century Britain, reflecting the wealth, status, and tastes of its era’s most successful artists. The museum has been open to the public since 1929 and continues to host temporary contemporary exhibitions, enriching its historical narrative.Visitor Experience and Facilities
Visitors typically spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the museum, with extra time often devoted to lingering in the Arab Hall or enjoying the tranquil garden. The museum offers step-free access, a gift shop, and a café. It also hosts occasional events such as music recitals in the studio and arts workshops. The garden and shop can be visited free of charge. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and open Wednesdays to Mondays from 10am to 5:30pm, with last entry at 4:30pm.Location and Surroundings
