The park’s defining feature is the elongated boating lake running north-east to south-west, retained by stone walls with islands, bridges and a western cascade of rockwork and stepping stones. A level, largely paved path circles the water, passing formal axes, copper-beech and cedar planting, yew hedges and flower beds that survive from the original 1920s design. At the western end a sandstone rockface and winding path rise toward the Trent Building, creating a theatrical backdrop without leaving the public park.

Adventure golf offers an 18-hole course themed around local motifs, positioned beside the lake and play area. Seasonal boat hire provides rowing boats, canoes, kayaks and stable multi-person craft from a lakeside kiosk. Model-boat sailing takes place on Sunday mornings and the Nottingham Croquet Club maintains historic lawns. These paid options sit within a free-entry landscape, allowing short or extended visits depending on weather and interest.

The landscape originated in the Highfields Estate, landscaped in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An existing fishpond was enlarged into the present lake. In 1920 Sir Jesse Boot purchased the estate; when his planned community did not proceed, the lower slopes became the public park while the upper ground formed the new University of Nottingham campus. Percy Richard Morley Horder designed both the park and the Trent Building. The city took trusteeship in 1923 and the park received Grade II* registration in 1996 for its intact early-twentieth-century municipal layout and associated structures.

Highfields occupies falling ground on the south-east edge of the university campus, bounded by University Boulevard. The 21–23 hectare site feels compact yet complete, large enough for a proper lake circuit yet small enough to combine walking, play and café stops in one visit. The atmosphere is leafy and civic: families, students, dog walkers and arts audiences share the space. It remains relaxing on weekdays and becomes livelier on sunny weekends when boats and golf operate.

The NET tram along University Boulevard provides the most direct public-transport link, with stops near the main entrances. Buses also serve the boulevard. On-site parking beside Lakeside Arts is limited and fills quickly on fine weekends. The lakeside path is flat and suitable for prams and many wheelchair users, though some older paths are uneven and the campus bank to the north-west is steeper. Park gates follow daylight hours, typically closing around 21:15 in summer and earlier in winter.
