Getting to and around Cat Ba Island

How to get there

Most visitors reach Cat Ba through Hai Phong, the principal mainland gateway, travelling onwards by ferry, high-speed boat, coach connection or other combined road-and-sea services. Routes commonly use ferry terminals in the Cat Hai area, while the cable-car system linking the mainland with Phu Long may also form part of some journeys when operating. From Hanoi, organised transfers and public transport connections to Hai Phong are widely used, but schedules and interchange arrangements vary. Hai Phong's Cat Bi International Airport is the nearest significant airport; it is not on Cat Ba Island, so a further transfer is required.

Transportation

Cat Ba Island is large enough for transport planning to matter. Currency and Payment
Vietnam's currency is the Vietnamese đồng, written as VND. Larger hotels, tour businesses and many restaurants in Cat Ba Town commonly accept bank cards or electronic payments, but smaller eateries, market stalls, boat services and rural businesses may prefer cash. Cash machines and exchange facilities are concentrated in the main settlement rather than the national park or isolated islands, so it is sensible to carry enough đồng for ferries, local transport, food and incidental expenses. Travellers should check whether a quoted tour or transfer price includes all boat, entrance or transport elements before paying.
Safety
Conditions on Cat Ba can change quickly with tropical rain, wind, heat and reduced visibility. Take care on steep or uneven paths, around caves and viewpoints, and near unguarded shorelines or cliffs. Follow local advice for swimming, kayaking and boat travel, particularly during rough weather or when currents are strong. Do not climb on unstable karst surfaces or enter restricted areas. Cat Ba Town is the most convenient base for first-time visitors because it combines accommodation, food, transport and access to boat excursions. Staying longer allows separate days for the national park, historical sites, beaches and Lan Ha Bay rather than trying to combine them in one rushed trip. Early departures generally provide calmer water and softer light, but operators may alter plans according to weather. History of Cat Ba Island

Limestone Islands and Early Settlement

Cat Ba's foundations are the result of long geological processes that shaped the limestone islands and drowned valleys of the Gulf of Tonkin. Human occupation is also ancient. Archaeological evidence from Cai Beo, on Cat Ba Island, is associated with a prehistoric coastal community that lived from marine resources several thousand years ago. The site is important for understanding early seafaring, fishing and shellfish gathering in northern Vietnam, linking the island's present maritime identity with a much older pattern of life along sheltered bays and island shores.

Maritime Communities and Island Livelihoods

For centuries, Cat Ba's communities have depended on fishing, aquaculture, small-scale agriculture and movement between the islands and mainland ports. Sheltered waters around the archipelago encouraged boat-based trade and settlement, while the limestone terrain limited extensive cultivation. Floating homes and fish farms became characteristic features of the bay environment, although their form and location have changed as environmental management and tourism have developed. Cat Ba Town grew as the island's main harbour and administrative centre, connecting local communities with Hai Phong and the wider coast.

Wartime and Military Heritage

The park is particularly significant for the Cat Ba langur, one of the world's rarest primates, whose survival depends on the protection of suitable island habitat. Biosphere and World Heritage Recognition

Cat Ba's environmental importance gained wider recognition when the archipelago became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2004.
