Red River Delta Essentials

  • The Red River Delta is accessible via Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, which is the main gateway for international travelers. From the airport, you can take a taxi, shuttle bus, or app-based ride service to your destination within the delta. Domestic travelers can also use the extensive railway system, with Hanoi being a major hub, or take long-distance buses from various parts of Vietnam.
  • The Red River Delta region has a well-developed transportation network. Within cities and towns, you can use taxis, motorbike taxis (xe ôm), and ride-hailing apps like Grab. Buses and minibuses (xe khách) connect the smaller towns and rural areas. For a more authentic experience, consider renting a bicycle or motorbike to explore the countryside at your own pace. Hanoi also has a metro system that is expanding to cover more areas.
  • The official currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops in urban areas. However, it is advisable to carry cash for transactions in smaller towns and rural areas. ATMs are abundant in cities like Hanoi, but less frequent in smaller towns, so withdraw sufficient cash before traveling to remote areas.
  • The Red River Delta is generally safe for tourists. However, petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur in crowded places, especially in tourist hotspots like Hanoi's Old Quarter. Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas and keep valuables secured. Some areas in Hanoi, particularly around the Old Quarter and touristy spots, may have higher rates of scams targeting tourists, so remain vigilant.
  • In case of an emergency, dial 113 for police, 114 for fire services, and 115 for medical emergencies. Major hospitals are located in Hanoi, and it is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Pharmacies are widespread and often have English-speaking staff. For minor health issues, over-the-counter medications are readily available.
  • Fashion: Do dress modestly, especially when visiting temples and pagodas. Avoid wearing overly revealing clothing. Religion: Do show respect at religious sites by removing hats and shoes when required. Take note of local customs and follow them. Public Transport: Do be courteous and offer your seat to elderly passengers. Don’t eat or drink on public transport. Greetings: Do greet people with a smile and a slight bow. A handshake is also common in business settings. Eating & Drinking: Do try local dishes and accept food offerings graciously. Don’t stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as it resembles incense sticks used in funerals, which is considered bad luck.
  • To experience the Red River Delta like a local, visit the bustling markets to sample fresh produce and traditional foods. Engage with local vendors and residents who are often friendly and willing to share insights about the area. Take a leisurely bike ride through the rural landscapes to explore rice paddies, traditional villages, and historical sites. Don’t miss a water puppet show, a traditional form of Vietnamese theater that originated in the Red River Delta.

History of Red River Delta

  • The Red River Delta, known as the cradle of Vietnamese civilization, has been formed over millennia by the sediment deposited by the Red River. This fertile plain, rich in alluvial soil, has supported agriculture and settlement for thousands of years, making it one of the most important regions in Vietnam.

  • Dating back to around 1000 BCE, the Đông Sơn Culture is one of the earliest known cultural periods in the Red River Delta. Renowned for its bronze drum-making technology, the Đông Sơn people laid the foundation for the later development of Vietnamese civilization. Artifacts from this period, such as the famous Đông Sơn drums, reflect a sophisticated society engaged in agriculture, hunting, and trade.

  • In the 10th century, the Red River Delta became the heartland of the Đại Việt kingdom, marking the beginning of a period of independence from Chinese rule. The establishment of the capital at Thăng Long (modern-day Hanoi) in 1010 by Emperor Lý Thái Tổ symbolized the emergence of a unified and powerful Vietnamese state. The Lý, Trần, and Lê dynasties that followed contributed to a golden age of cultural, political, and economic development.

  • One of the most significant historical events in the Red River Delta is the Battle of Bạch Đằng, which took place in 938 CE. Vietnamese forces, led by Ngô Quyền, defeated the Southern Han navy by using innovative tactics involving underwater stakes to trap enemy ships. This victory ended centuries of Chinese domination and established the independence of Vietnam.

  • In the late 19th century, the Red River Delta fell under French colonial rule as part of French Indochina. Hanoi became the capital of French Indochina and underwent significant urban planning and architectural transformation. The period saw the construction of key infrastructures, such as railways and bridges, but also witnessed resistance and uprisings against colonial rule, laying the groundwork for future independence movements.

  • The August Revolution of 1945 was a pivotal moment in the history of the Red River Delta and Vietnam as a whole. The Việt Minh, led by Hồ Chí Minh, successfully ousted the Japanese occupiers and the French colonial government, declaring the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This event marked the beginning of modern Vietnam and the struggle for national sovereignty.

  • During the Vietnam War (1955-1975), the Red River Delta region, especially Hanoi, played a crucial role. Hanoi was the capital of North Vietnam and a focal point for political, military, and logistical operations. The city endured heavy bombing campaigns, particularly during Operation Rolling Thunder and the Christmas Bombing of 1972, which left significant marks on the region's landscape and history.

  • Following the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of the country in 1975, the Red River Delta underwent extensive reconstruction and modernization. Efforts were made to rebuild infrastructure, revive agriculture, and develop industry. Today, the delta remains a vital economic region, known for its vibrant culture, bustling urban centers, and enduring historical legacy.
