Experience Island Nature Trail

Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving, head south on the main road (Chincoteague Road) until you reach Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. Turn left onto Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. Continue straight for approximately 2 miles. The Island Nature Trail will be on your right. There is no entry fee for the trail.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, check for local shuttle services that operate during the tourist season. Many shuttles will take you from Chincoteague Island to Assateague Island. Once you arrive at the Assateague Island Visitor Center, you can either walk or bike approximately 1 mile along the designated paths until you reach Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. From there, continue another half mile to the Island Nature Trail entrance, which will be on your right.

  • Bicycle

    If you prefer biking, there are bike rental services available in Chincoteague. Rent a bike and head south on Chincoteague Road, then take a left onto Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. The Island Nature Trail is about 2 miles down the road on your right. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all local biking regulations.
