From Virginia Beach, head to the nearest bus stop and catch the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) bus route 15 or route 20. Make sure to check the schedule for departure times. Ride the bus towards Portsmouth and get off at the stop for the 'Portsmouth City Hall'. Once you get off, walk approximately 0.5 miles northeast along High Street towards London Street. Turn right on London Street and continue until you reach the intersection with Water Street. The Lightship Portsmouth Museum will be on your left.

To take the ferry, first make your way to the ferry terminal located at the end of High Street in Portsmouth. You can take a local bus or use rideshare services to reach the terminal. Board the ferry that crosses the Elizabeth River to Norfolk. Once you arrive in Norfolk, disembark and head to the nearest bus stop. Catch the HRT bus route 1 towards Portsmouth and get off at 'Portsmouth City Hall'. From there, walk northeast along High Street, turn right on London Street, and continue to the Lightship Portsmouth Museum.

If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike through a local bike-share program available in Virginia Beach. Head towards the Elizabeth River Trail which connects to Portsmouth. Once you arrive in Portsmouth, follow the bike paths to High Street and then to London Street. The Lightship Portsmouth Museum is located at the intersection of London and Water Streets.
