Car
If you're driving from Portland, take I-84 East towards The Dalles. After about 30 miles, take exit 44 for Cascade Locks. Follow the signs for the Historic Columbia River Highway. Once on the highway, continue for about 5 miles until you reach Ponytail Falls. There is a small parking area at the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly on weekends, so arrive early to secure a spot. Parking is free.
Public Transportation
To reach Ponytail Falls via public transportation, take the Columbia Gorge Express from Portland to Cascade Locks. The bus departs from the Gateway Transit Center. Once you arrive in Cascade Locks, you will need to walk about 2.5 miles to reach the trailhead for Ponytail Falls. Make sure to check the schedule in advance, as the bus runs on a limited schedule, especially during the off-peak season.
Hiking
If you're already in the Columbia River Gorge and near the Historic Columbia River Highway, there are several hiking trails leading to Ponytail Falls. The most popular route is from the Eagle Creek Trailhead. From here, follow the Eagle Creek Trail for about 1.5 miles. The trail is well-marked and leads directly to the falls. Be prepared for some elevation gain and uneven terrain. Ensure you have good hiking shoes and plenty of water.
