Long before European settlers arrived, the area now known as Kent was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Duwamish and Muckleshoot peoples. These tribes thrived along the Green River, relying on its abundant resources for fishing, hunting, and gathering.

Kent was first settled by European Americans in the mid-19th century. The fertile land attracted farmers, particularly those of German and Scandinavian descent. Initially called 'Titusville' after an early settler, the town was later renamed 'Kent' in 1889, inspired by the county of Kent in England, known for its hop-growing industry.
