Wheeling Suspension Bridge: A Historical Marvel

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are in the downtown Wheeling area, start at the Wheeling Heritage Port, which is a popular location along the riverfront. Head northwest along the riverwalk pathway. Continue following the path until you reach the intersection with 14th Street. Turn left onto 14th Street and continue walking until you reach the intersection with Main Street. Here, you will see signs for the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. Continue straight ahead, and you will see the bridge ahead of you, spanning the Ohio River.

• Public Transit

  If you are near a bus stop for the Ohio Valley Regional Transit Authority (OVRTA), catch a bus heading towards the Wheeling Park area. Get off at the stop nearest to the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which is usually at Main Street. From there, walk southeast along Main Street until you see the access point to the bridge. It will be clearly marked and is a short walk from the bus stop.

• Biking

  If you have access to a bike, you can start from the Wheeling Heritage Port. Follow the riverwalk path heading northwest, then take 14th Street as you would if walking. Biking is a great way to enjoy the scenery along the river. As you approach Main Street, be sure to slow down as the bridge entrance will be on your left, directly off Main Street.
