Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car along the Great River Road, head towards Onalaska, Wisconsin. Look for County Rd Z. From the main highway (Highway 35), you can turn onto County Rd Z. The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge | La Crosse District Visitor Center & Office is located at N5727 County Rd Z, Onalaska, WI 54650. Follow the signs for the wildlife refuge once you enter County Rd Z. Parking is available on-site, and there are no fees for parking.

• Public Transportation

  For those relying on public transportation, check local bus routes through the La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility (MTU). You will need to take a bus to downtown La Crosse and transfer to a route that heads towards Onalaska. The nearest stop to the refuge is still a short walk from the Visitor Center. Be prepared for a walk of approximately 1 mile from the nearest bus stop to N5727 County Rd Z. It’s advisable to check the current bus schedule and routes on the MTU website, and note that bus fares may apply.

• Bicycle

  If you are feeling adventurous and want to bike, the Great River State Trail runs through the area. You can access this trail from various points along the Great River Road. The trail leads to Onalaska, and from there you can bike to N5727 County Rd Z. Make sure to wear a helmet and be aware of traffic, as some portions do require sharing the road with vehicles.
