Very nice train ride and rafting experience. If you’re wondering how gentle or hard rafting is … well it’s pretty tame. Read the info that the tour is in Japanese and any English needed is done by Google translate.

This tour was organised very efficiently and even though our guide had very little English every thing was worked out so she could communicate with everyone on the tour. The Segano Railway trip was a lovely experience and the Hozugawa River Boat Ride was fabulous, the guides and boat operators were very entertaining, quite a comedy act between the three of them! Apart from the laughs they were very skilled at handling the boat

While researching this excursion I saw there were several different companies that broker this event, however, while not the least expensive, Tripadvisor appeared to be the most reliable and that was confirmed on our trip. Our only difficulty was finding the correct bus station at the Kyoto Station. Kyoto Station is ginormous and has multiple bus stations around it. The Okoshi bus station is on the North exit (kitaguchi) of the station (opposite of the Hachijo exit) and that is where we needed to be.
Once we arrived at the correct bus station, everything was well taken care of from there. The ticket agent immediately found our TripAdvisor reservation and the bus took us to the Sagano Railway where a vintage train transported us to the riverboat dock. The train ride was beautiful but that was just the beginning of the majestic scenery.
We boarded the wooden riverboat which seated about 20 passengers. True to form, it required physical rowing at the bow of the boat. One would talk as he rowed, the other was using a large dowel to push the boat forward from the bottom of the river. The crew were not only impressive with their fitness, but entertaining and informative about the lush valley that presented itself with breathtaking scenery.
I worried slightly that with such a long excursion there wouldn't be any food, but along came another riverboat with hot Japanese street food to sell. It was a nice surprise and delicious.
They gave us a couple of hours to shop and eat near the Bamboo Forest (Arashiyama) and if we better understood how to find the Bamboo Forest we probably would have spent some time there (but we saw on another tour) however, the town was full of places to eat, drink and boutiques to shop. The bus returned us back to Kyoto Station, making life simple that day.

I booked this tour a few months ago and it was cancelled by the operator. There was a comment that they do not do the boat rides in the summer because the water is too low.
Yesterday here in Kyoto we self-booked the “Romantic Train” after waking the bamboo forest. I see from the train that the boats are operating and filled with tourists. I was so confused about what happened with our situation and disappointed that we were not able to do it. I’m not sure why this happened.

Boat ride is 2 hours and slow. Seats are just a plank and no back rest. Everyone is crammed. Great service but boat was a waste of time. Train ride was nice.

At each sightseeing spot, the guide will display the return time before departure for the next stop. Please be sure to confirm it and return to the bus on time. If you do not follow the instructions, the bus will depart for the next destination without waiting. -
Children over 5 years old under 80cm will not be able to participate in the Hozugawa riverboat ride

Children up to 5 years old who are under 80cm tall do not require a seat and so can participate for free.

Depending on river conditions the Hozugawa boat ride may be cancelled. Alternate activities will be provided instead.

In the event that the Hozugawa River descent is canceled due to bad weather, the tour will be conducted with an alternative route. A refund for the Hozugawa River descent will also be issued on-site.
