Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron - Transfiguration of the Saviour
The largest of the monasteries on the highest spot of Meteora, the Monastery of Grand (or Megalo) Meteoron was founded around 1340 by monk Athanasios. The Monastery of Grand Meteoron is one of the most important historical monuments in Kalambaka. It is located on a hill overlooking the city. The monastery was founded by Tsar Ivan Kaloyanov in the 14th atcentury, and it was built on a site where there had been a church dedicated to St. Nicholas since the 10th century. The monastery was abandoned after Turkish rule ended in 1821 and it has been restored since then. The Monastery of Grand Meteoron is an example of how churches were built here, with their rich decoration and impressive architecture .The main church of the monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was built in 14th century and it was reconstructed in 1821.
Monastery of Varlaam
The Monastery of St. Varlaam is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that is part of the Meteora monastery complex in Thessaly, central Greece. It is situated at the top of a rocky precipice , 900 meters above the sea level, surrounded by forests and open to the sky. The monastery is under the jurisdiction of Mount Athos.The Monastery of St. Varlaam is named after a monk who reposed on this spot in June 1336, during a great storm. In 1743, an icon of Saint Varlaam was discovered on the spot, under the icon of Saint John the Forerunner. The monastery was established in 1765 by Abbot Ioannina of Karyes.
The Lake Plastira is an artificial lake, created to collect water for the nearby farms. It gives many picturesque natural views. The surrounding area is known for its stunning scenery and serenity, ideal for a scenic retreat . The lake is a popular fishing spot and provides sport for water sports enthusiasts. The landscape of the surrounding area is hilly and woody. There are many small towns in a very close proximity, such as Kalamitsi, Xylokastro, Kallithea and Kalatas. The distance from the lake to Athens is about 500 km. The lake is a long, narrow basin formed by the river from the Rioni and Xylohronos mountain ranges, which meet at its easternmost point.
