Day 5: A Day of Discovery: Gardens, Museums, and Harari Culture
Exploring Harar's beauty and history: Bekri's Garden, Harari National Museum, and local treasures reveal the city's vibrant soul.
A Day of Cultural Immersion
Today was a day dedicated to delving deeper into the heart of Harar, exploring its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It's amazing how much history and tranquility can be found within the walls of this ancient city. I was eager to share these experiences with Hans-Peter and Lila, and I knew they would appreciate the blend of nature, history, and culture that Harar has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Central Hotle Harar. The injera was fresh, and the stews were flavorful, providing the perfect start to our explorations. Lila especially enjoyed the variety of vegetarian options, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The warm hospitality made us feel right at home, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.
A Morning Stroll in Bekri's Garden
After breakfast, we made our way to Bekri's Garden. This serene oasis is a true gem within Harar, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city streets. As we entered, we were immediately enveloped by the lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the vibrant colors of the plants created a picturesque scene.

Lila was particularly excited to explore the garden, running ahead to discover hidden pathways and colorful blossoms. Hans-Peter and I strolled at a more leisurely pace, taking in the beauty around us. We paused by a small pond, watching the dragonflies dance over the water. It was a perfect moment of peace and connection with nature.
I reflected on my childhood days spent playing in gardens much like this one. Harar has always had a special connection to nature, and Bekri's Garden is a testament to that. It's a place where you can truly relax and rejuvenate, surrounded by the beauty of the natural world. I was so happy to share this experience with my family, allowing them to understand a part of my upbringing and the tranquility I found in these green spaces.
The beauty of Harar lies not only in its ancient walls and bustling markets but also in its quiet corners of natural serenity.
Discovering History at the Harari National Museum
Next on our itinerary was the Harari National Museum. Located across from Ras Makonnen's Palace, this museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, traditional costumes, weapons, and jewelry. I was particularly excited to share this part of Harar's heritage with Hans-Peter and Lila, as it offers a deep dive into the unique history and culture of the Harari people.

I found myself drawn to the displays of weapons and jewelry, each piece telling a story of Harar's past. It was humbling to see the artifacts that represented the resilience and creativity of my ancestors. I shared stories with Hans-Peter and Lila about the significance of certain items, explaining how they were used in ceremonies, celebrations, and daily life.
