Discover the majestic Todra Gorge with family! Hike through stunning landscapes, explore hidden gardens, and savor authentic Moroccan flavors.
Finding Serenity in the Gorge
Today was a day of exploration and unexpected discoveries in the heart of Todra Gorge. It's amazing how a single day can hold so many different experiences, each leaving its own unique mark. I'm excited to share the highlights with you all.
Our day began, as most days here have, with a delightful breakfast at dar ait bara chez habitant. The simple Berber fare of bread, olives, and tea was the perfect fuel for our morning adventure. Aisha always says, it's the simple things that truly nourish you, and she couldn't have been more right this morning.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off for the Todra Gorge Hike (Loop). This hike came highly recommended, and I was eager to see the towering cliffs and stunning landscapes for myself. The weather in December is quite pleasant for hiking, with daytime temperatures hovering around 18-20°C. Perfect for a family adventure!

The loop started near the narrowest point of the gorge, and the sheer scale of the cliffs was immediately awe-inspiring. Tunde and Funke were snapping photos like mad, trying to capture the immensity of it all. I must admit, even my trusty camera struggled to convey the true grandeur of the place. We started our ascent, following the path that wound its way up the side of the gorge. The trail was rocky, but manageable, and the higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the views became.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the simple act of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.
About halfway through the hike, we encountered a group of Berber nomads living in traditional tents. They offered us tea, and we gladly accepted, sitting with them and learning about their way of life. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the simple joys in life. Aisha was particularly touched by their warm hospitality, something she always appreciates, reminding her of home. The kids were fascinated by their goats and camels, a far cry from our life in Ottawa.
After our tea break, we continued our hike, eventually descending into the Ait Tizgui village. The village was a maze of mud-brick houses and narrow alleyways, and we enjoyed wandering through it, soaking up the local atmosphere. We even got a chance to peek into a local artisan's workshop, where he was crafting beautiful carpets. Funke was particularly interested, as she's always had an eye for design.
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed to Restaurant Luxe Tinghir. The restaurant offered a variety of Moroccan dishes, and we all opted for tagine. It was delicious, the perfect blend of spices and flavors. Tunde, ever the adventurous eater, even tried the Berber pizza, a local specialty.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore A Secret Garden, a guesthouse and garden tucked away in the gorge. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, as it's hidden away from the main road. But once we arrived, we were immediately enchanted. The garden was a lush oasis of greenery, a stark contrast to the surrounding rocky landscape. We spent a couple of hours wandering through it, admiring the flowers and enjoying the tranquility.

The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful, the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day's events, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Todra Gorge is a truly special place, a place of breathtaking beauty and rich culture. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to experience it with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Rock n Yogi Adventures and Toudgha essoufla park. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what it holds.
I am also glad that I remembered to bring my hiking boots and sunscreen. However, I'm still kicking myself for forgetting my portable charger and first aid kit. A portable charger would have been handy for keeping my phone and camera powered up during the long hike, and a first aid kit is always a good idea to have on hand, especially when hiking in remote areas. Oh well, lesson learned. I'll make sure to pack them next time.
