Adventurous Escape to Samaria Gorge
Day 3: Unveiling Crete's Hidden Gems: Caves, Canyons, and Raki Revelations
Discover the rugged beauty of Crete beyond the Samaria Gorge, exploring caves, canyons, and the warmth of local hospitality on this amazing adventure.
Day 3: Caves, Canyons, and Cretan Cheer
Today was all about venturing off the beaten path, diving deep into the heart of Crete's raw, untamed beauty. It’s funny, before this trip, I envisioned endless beaches and ancient ruins, but Crete is so much more than that. It's a land of hidden caves, dramatic canyons, and, as I discovered, a spirit that's as warm and inviting as the Mediterranean sun. David, always the history buff, was particularly excited about exploring some of the lesser-known historical sites, while I was eager to soak in the natural beauty. And, of course, we both looked forward to sampling more of the local cuisine!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at SAMARIA, a local spot in the village where we're staying. Fuelled up with strong Greek coffee and some delicious pastries, we set off to explore the Kormokopou Cave. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with stunning views of the coastline. As we drove, I couldn't help but think about how different this landscape is from the rolling hills of Indiana where I grew up. I miss those familiar landscapes sometimes, but then I see something like this, and I'm reminded why I love exploring new places.

The hike to the cave was relatively easy, a welcome change after yesterday's trek. The path led us through a fragrant pine forest, the air thick with the scent of resin and damp earth. It was so peaceful, the only sounds the rustling of leaves and the distant bleating of goats. We reached the cave entrance, a large, imposing opening in the rock face. Inside, it was cool and dark, a stark contrast to the bright sunshine outside. The cave itself was more of a large cavern, with some interesting rock formations and a small spring. I read that the spring provides water for hikers and local wildlife, which is pretty neat. It's amazing to think about how many people and animals have relied on this water source over the centuries. David was fascinated by the ruins inside the cave, speculating about their purpose and age.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world, where nature and history intertwine.
After exploring the Kormokopou Cave, we decided to tackle the canyon Eligia. This gorge runs parallel to the more famous Samaria Gorge and is known for its wild, rugged beauty. The most common trail starts in Agios Ioannis village. We only hiked a portion of it, as the full trek requires an experienced guide and two days. The scenery was incredible, with towering cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sound of rushing water. It felt like we were stepping into another world, a world untouched by time. As we hiked, David pointed out different types of plants and rock formations, sharing his knowledge with his usual enthusiasm. I love how he always finds a way to make even the simplest things interesting.

Lunch was at Pension Paradise, a charming taverna nestled in the mountains. We feasted on traditional Cretan dishes, savoring the fresh, local ingredients. The owner was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the region and offering us homemade wine. It's these kinds of interactions that make traveling so special, the chance to connect with people and learn about their lives. While we ate, we discussed our plans for tomorrow, which include visiting the Samaria Gorge (hopefully it will be accessible!) and exploring the Drakolaki Cave.

In the evening, we found ourselves at the Raki Bar, a local haunt where the atmosphere was buzzing with laughter and conversation. Raki, as I've learned, is the national drink of Crete, a potent spirit made from grapes. It's similar to Italian grappa, and it definitely packs a punch. We joined in the revelry, sharing stories with the locals and learning a few Greek phrases. I even tried my hand at some traditional Greek dancing, much to David's amusement. The owner of the bar, a jovial man with a twinkle in his eye, kept our glasses full and the conversation flowing. He told us about the history of raki and its importance in Cretan culture. It's more than just a drink; it's a symbol of friendship, hospitality, and celebration.

Before heading back to our campsite, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Rousios. The food was incredible, but the company was even better. We met a couple from Australia who were also hiking in the area. We shared stories and tips, and it was lovely to connect with fellow travelers. It's funny how travel can bring people together, creating bonds that transcend borders and cultures.

As I lay in my tent tonight, listening to the sounds of the Cretan night, I feel grateful for this experience. It's been a day of discovery, adventure, and connection. I've seen breathtaking landscapes, explored hidden caves, and tasted the warmth of Cretan hospitality. And tomorrow, I get to do it all again. I'm particularly excited about hiking the Samaria Gorge, as I've heard it's one of the most beautiful hikes in Europe. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Agora Products Boutique, as I want to pick up some souvenirs for my family back home. I'm sure they'll appreciate a taste of Crete, even if they can't be here to experience it themselves.
Crete in December is proving to be an amazing experience. The weather has been mild, though we have had some rain, the crowds are thin, and the landscape is stunning. It's the perfect time to explore the island's hidden gems and connect with its rich culture. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Tomorrow promises more adventure as we plan to hike the Samaria Gorge and explore the Drakolaki Cave. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at the Agora Products Boutique. Good night from Crete!
P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to misplace my portable phone charger today. Lesson learned: always double-check your backpack before leaving camp!
