Sesimbra's Embrace: History, Beaches, and Bliss

Today was a delightful blend of history and relaxation in the charming coastal town of Sesimbra. David and I set out to explore its historic castle and soak up the sun on its beautiful beach, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's days like these that remind me why we love to travel – the perfect mix of culture and leisure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Taberna Porto à Noite. It was a bit of a drive from Arrábida Natural Park, but I had read such wonderful reviews that I knew we had to try it. And boy, were they right! While technically in Porto, the name was a bit misleading, as we were still very much in Sesimbra. I opted for a traditional *tosta mista* (ham and cheese toastie) and David had the *pão com chouriço* (bread with chorizo), both washed down with strong *café com leite*. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. The reviews don't lie; the food was simple, honest, and utterly delicious.

With our appetites satisfied, we headed towards the Castelo de Sesimbra, perched high above the town. The drive up was steep and winding, but the views were already breathtaking. As we parked, the fresh sea air filled our lungs, invigorating us for the historical adventure ahead. The castle itself is a magnificent structure, a testament to Portugal’s rich and complex past.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet moments of reflection amidst ancient stones and breathtaking vistas.

Walking through the castle grounds, I couldn't help but imagine the countless stories these walls could tell. Originally built in the 9th century during the Muslim occupation, it was later conquered by the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1165. It changed hands a few times before King Sancho I finally secured it in 1199 with the help of Frankish Crusaders. Standing on the ramparts, gazing out at the Atlantic, it was easy to understand why this location was so strategically important. The panoramic views of Sesimbra and the coastline were simply stunning.

David, ever the history buff, was in his element, reading every informational plaque and pointing out architectural details I might have missed. He was particularly fascinated by the West Tower, built in 1323 as a lookout for Barbary pirates. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the small church, Igreja de Santa Maria, nestled within the castle walls. Its simple beauty and peaceful atmosphere offered a moment of tranquility amidst the historical grandeur. We spent a good couple of hours exploring every nook and cranny of the castle, soaking in the history and the views. The climb up was definitely worth it, and I even managed to snap some amazing photos for the blog.

After our historical immersion, it was time for some beachside relaxation at Sesimbra Beach. The sandy beach was only a short drive from the castle. The town was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to enjoy the beautiful weather. We found a perfect spot on the sand, spread out our towels, and settled in for an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming. The water was surprisingly refreshing, a welcome contrast to the warm sun. I even braved a quick dip, though David, ever the cautious one, only dipped his toes in.

As we lounged on the beach, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The sound of the waves, the warmth of the sun, and the stunning views of the coastline – it was pure bliss. I people-watched for a while, amused by the families building sandcastles, the teenagers playing volleyball, and the elderly couples strolling hand-in-hand along the shore. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simple joys of life. I made a mental note to add Sesimbra Beach to my list of favorite beaches in Portugal – it definitely deserves a spot.

Around lunchtime, our stomachs started to rumble, so we strolled along the promenade in search of a restaurant. We decided on Portofino, drawn in by its prime location overlooking the beach and its enticing menu. We managed to snag a table on the terrace, giving us a front-row seat to the stunning coastal views. I opted for the grilled fish, while David chose the seafood risotto. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The service was also excellent, our waiter being attentive and friendly. It was the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch, soaking in the sun and the atmosphere.

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping. I had read about a store called My Favourite Things, and I was curious to check it out. It turned out to be a charming little boutique selling a curated selection of clothing, accessories, and homewares. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our trip to Arrábida. David, surprisingly, found a stylish new hat that he absolutely loved. It’s always fun to discover unique and local shops while traveling – it adds a personal touch to the experience.

As evening approached, we made our way to Feito ao Bife for dinner. I was looking forward to this all day, as I had read rave reviews about their steaks. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered their signature steak, cooked to perfection and served with a generous portion of fries. David, not being a huge meat eater, opted for the grilled chicken, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The meal was delicious and satisfying, the perfect end to a perfect day. We chatted about our favorite moments of the day, savoring the memories we had created.

After dinner, feeling content and tired, we drove back to our accommodation in Arrábida Natural Park. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Sesimbra. From the historical grandeur of the Castelo de Sesimbra to the relaxing vibes of Sesimbra Beach, it was a day of contrasts and delights. It’s a place that seamlessly blends history, nature, and culture, offering something for everyone. I highly recommend adding Sesimbra to your list of must-visit destinations in Portugal.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of Arrábida Natural Park itself, with a visit to the Mourisca Tide Mill and the Miradouro Cabeço do Melão. I’m especially excited about the views from the *miradouro* (viewpoint), and David is keen to see the tide mill in action. And of course, we'll be trying out some more local restaurants, including Restaurante Retiro do Campo for breakfast, Ondagalapos for lunch, and O Zagaia for dinner. We might even check out Fun Friends n’ Fandango, a local bar, for a nightcap. Stay tuned for more adventures!
