Art, Architecture, and Ancient Streets of Fes

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Fes, a city that seems to breathe history and art with every corner you turn. I've always found that immersing myself in the local culture is the best way to truly experience a place, and Fes certainly didn't disappoint. With Greta back in Berlin taking care of our cat, Schnitzel, I set out with my friends, eager to explore what Fes had in store for us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fez & Friends, a cozy spot recommended by our riad owner. Fuelled up with traditional Moroccan pancakes and mint tea, we set off to our first destination: the Dar Batha Museum.

Dar Batha Museum: A Tranquil Escape

The Dar Batha Museum, also known as the Museum of Moroccan Arts, was a serene start to our exploration. Housed in a 19th-century palace, the museum is a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship. As an ESL teacher, I'm always fascinated by how different cultures express themselves, and the intricate pottery, woodwork, and textiles here spoke volumes.

The Andalusian garden was a highlight, a tranquil courtyard filled with orange trees and the sweet scent of blossoms. It was the perfect place to take a moment, breathe in the atmosphere, and appreciate the beauty surrounding us. I even managed to snap a few photos, trying to capture the essence of the place, though I know no picture can truly do it justice.

The beauty of Fes lies not just in its monuments, but in the everyday lives that unfold within its ancient walls.

Al Attarine Madrasa: A Masterpiece of Marinid Architecture

Next on our list was the Al Attarine Madrasa, a religious school that stands as one of the best examples of Marinid architecture. Built in the 14th century, the madrasa is a feast for the eyes, with its detailed stucco work, cedarwood carvings, and vibrant zellij tiles. The name Al Attarine comes from the nearby spice and perfume market, adding another layer to its rich history.

As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the sense of peace and contemplation. The central courtyard, with its marble fountain and intricate decorations, invited us to slow down and appreciate the artistry. The small student rooms surrounding the courtyard offered a glimpse into the lives of the scholars who once studied here, dedicating themselves to learning and spiritual growth.

I found myself particularly drawn to the calligraphy adorning the walls, each inscription telling a story or imparting wisdom. It reminded me of my own students in Berlin, many of whom are learning English to build a new life for themselves. The pursuit of knowledge, it seems, is a universal human endeavor.

Wandering Through Talaa Kebira

After soaking in the beauty of the Al Attarine Madrasa, we ventured into the bustling Talaa Kebira, one of the main streets of the Fes el Bali. This vibrant thoroughfare is a sensory overload in the best possible way, with shops overflowing with colorful textiles, fragrant spices, and handcrafted goods. The energy of the street was infectious, and we found ourselves caught up in the rhythm of the city.

We stopped at Art fez, a shop recommended by a local, where I picked up a few souvenirs for Greta and myself. I snagged a beautiful ceramic tagine, perfect for cooking up some Caribbean-inspired dishes back in Berlin, and a hand-painted bowl that I know Greta will adore. I'm always on the lookout for unique pieces that reflect the culture of the places I visit, and Art fez certainly delivered.

As we strolled along Talaa Kebira, we couldn't resist sampling some of the local street food. From juicy grilled meats to sweet pastries, the flavors of Fes were on full display. I tried a traditional Moroccan orange juice, freshly squeezed and incredibly refreshing, and a small pastry filled with almond paste that was simply divine.

A Culinary Journey: Lunch and Dinner

For lunch, we indulged in a meal at Restaurant Soultana, a hidden gem tucked away in one of the medina's narrow alleyways. The restaurant's traditional Moroccan dishes were a delight, and we savored every bite of the tagine and couscous. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and we felt like we were dining in someone's home.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine for dinner. This restaurant lived up to its mysterious name, with its dimly lit interior and exotic décor. The food was exceptional, and we enjoyed a variety of Moroccan specialties, including a flavorful tagine cooked in a traditional clay pot.

Reflections on the Day

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Fes is a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. From the tranquil beauty of the Dar Batha Museum to the architectural marvel of the Al Attarine Madrasa, every moment was a reminder of the rich history and culture of this ancient city.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab Boujloud, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II, and the Andalusian Mosque. I'm particularly excited to see Bab Boujloud, the iconic blue gate that serves as the main entrance to the medina. I've seen countless photos of it, but I know that seeing it in person will be an entirely different experience.

Before heading back to the riad, we stopped by a local café for one last cup of mint tea. As I sipped the sweet, fragrant brew, I watched the city come alive with the sounds of laughter, music, and lively conversation. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Fes, you have truly captured my heart. I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. I'm also excited to share more of my experiences with my students back in Berlin, hoping to inspire them to explore the world and embrace new cultures.
