Fez's Timeless Echoes

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Fes, a city that seems to hum with centuries of stories. From the grand architecture to the quiet corners of spiritual significance, every moment felt like stepping back in time. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and sensory overload – in the best possible way. I am excited to share my experiences with you.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Le Peroke Cafe Restaurant. I was excited to try it out, as I had read that it offers vegan options. Greta will be pleased to hear that! Although she is not here with me on this trip, I always keep her dietary preferences in mind. The restaurant had a charming, eclectic vibe, and the food was delicious and set us up perfectly for the adventures ahead.

First on the agenda was Bab Boujloud, the iconic Blue Gate. Even though it was constructed by French colonialists in 1913, it stands as a majestic entrance to the medina. The gate is adorned with intricate mosaic tiles, blue on the outside and green on the inside. The vibrant colors and detailed craftsmanship were stunning, a perfect introduction to the artistic wonders of Fes. The area inside the gate was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists creating a lively atmosphere. Street vendors displayed their wares, and the sounds of daily life echoed off the ancient walls. It was a sensory feast, and I found myself completely captivated.

To walk through Fes is to walk through time, each corner revealing a new layer of history and culture.

Next, we ventured towards the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. I knew that non-Muslims aren't allowed to enter. However, I was still eager to witness the exterior of this sacred place. As we approached, the spiritual significance of the site was palpable. Moulay Idriss II is revered as the founder of Fes and a key figure in Moroccan history, and the mausoleum stands as a testament to his legacy. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tile work and traditional Moroccan motifs adorning the exterior. I took a moment to reflect on the history and cultural importance of the site, feeling a sense of reverence and respect.

After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere, we made our way to the Andalusian Mosque. This mosque, like the Qarawiyyin Mosque, began as a small neighborhood mosque and became a congregational mosque in the 10th century. The Andalusian Mosque was founded in 859-860 AD by Maryam bint Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Fihri, the sister of Fatima al-Fihri. The mosque's present appearance is the result of additions and reconstruction dating from the 10th and 14th centuries. I was struck by the serene beauty of the mosque and its historical significance. The architecture reflected a blend of influences, with a minaret added in the 10th century and a portal constructed in the 13th century by artisans from Granada. The intricate details and peaceful ambiance made it a place of quiet contemplation.

For lunch, we stopped at Chez Hakim, a restaurant recommended for its Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try the chicken couscous, and it was a delightful experience. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was the perfect spot to recharge before continuing our exploration. I made a mental note to try and recreate the dish when I get back to Berlin; Greta would love it.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Eden Chope Bar. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, and it was a great place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. I enjoyed a refreshing drink and chatted with some locals, learning more about the city and its culture. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

I am so glad I remembered to bring my camera today. I almost forgot it! I have been taking a lot of photos. I hope that they are of good quality. I have been trying to improve my photography skills. I even looked up some online tutorials. I can't wait to show them to Greta. I think she will be proud of me.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Fes El Jdid, visit the Borj Nord Museum, and see the Nejjarine Fountain. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and cultural immersion in this fascinating city. I am keen to check out Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques, a shop that I will be visiting tomorrow.

Fes continues to surprise and inspire me. It's a city where history comes alive, where every corner holds a story, and where the senses are constantly engaged. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique cultural gem, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you.

Tonight, I am reflecting on the beauty and history that is all around me. I am grateful for the chance to experience this city with my friends. I am also thinking of Greta and looking forward to seeing her again soon.

Until tomorrow!
