Fez Through the Arches

Today was a day of exploration and indulgence, a sensory feast that painted Fes in vibrant hues. From the echoing history within ancient gates to the fragrant tranquility of hidden gardens, and finally, the explosion of flavors in the city's culinary heart, Fes continued to unveil its magic. It was a day of wandering and wonder, shared with friends, that deepened my appreciation for this captivating city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Calairis. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast with mint tea, which was a delightful start to our Fassi adventure. The cafe had a cozy atmosphere, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration.

With our bellies full, we ventured into the heart of Fes el Bali, ready to immerse ourselves in its rich history. Our first stop was Palais Mnebhi. The palace was beautiful, with intricate tile work and lush gardens. We spent some time wandering through its halls, imagining what life must have been like when it was a residence of a prominent Moroccan noble. The architecture was stunning, a true testament to Moroccan craftsmanship. I learned that the Palais Mnebhi is also where the Treaty of Fes was signed in 1912, marking a significant moment in Moroccan history. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe standing in a place where such important decisions were made.

The beauty of Fes lies not just in its monuments, but in the everyday moments of discovery that weave together to create an unforgettable tapestry.

Next, we made our way to Bab Mahrouk, one of the main western gates of the old city. It was built in 1204 and has quite a history. Originally known as Bab ash-Shari'a, meaning Gate of Justice, it later became known as Bab Mahrouk, meaning Gate of the Burnt, after a rebel's body was burned there. The gate itself was impressive, with its Moorish arch and imposing structure. I could almost hear the echoes of centuries past as we walked through it.

Outside the gate, we explored the Bab Mahrouk Cemetery, one of the main cemeteries of the old city. It was a somber but fascinating experience, walking among the tombs and reflecting on the lives of those who came before us. It's believed that one of the tombs might even hold the remains of Muhammad XII, the last ruler of Granada, though that's yet to be confirmed.

Afterward, we strolled through Bab Makina Plaza. The plaza is a vast open space surrounded by high stone walls, and I learned that it's often used for music festivals and cultural events. I could imagine the plaza filled with music and lights, a vibrant celebration of Moroccan culture. Though it was quiet during our visit, it was still impressive to stand in such a grand space.

For lunch, we headed to Darori, a restaurant in the heart of the Medina. The restaurant is set in a stunning 17th-century riad, and the interior design was breathtaking. We were seated in a cozy courtyard, surrounded by intricate tile work and beautiful architecture. The food was equally impressive. I decided to try the beef and prune tagine, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, a perfect blend of sweet and savory. It was one of the best meals I've had in Fes so far.

As the day began to wind down, we decided to treat ourselves to a fancy dinner at Les Jardins de Sheherazade. The restaurant is known for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine and its beautiful setting. We dined in a lush garden, surrounded by fragrant flowers and twinkling lights. I ordered the couscous with seven vegetables, a traditional Moroccan dish that was both flavorful and satisfying. The ambiance was romantic and serene, a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

After dinner, we decided to check out Sphinx, a bar in the Ville Nouvelle district. The bar was lively, with music and dancing. It was a fun way to experience a different side of Fes, away from the traditional Medina. I enjoyed a few drinks and soaked in the energetic atmosphere before we headed back to our riad.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by how much Fes has to offer. From its ancient gates and palaces to its serene gardens and vibrant nightlife, there's something for everyone in this city. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Marinid Tombs, Viewpoint Medina, and Borj Sud to enjoy panoramic views of Fes and delve deeper into its history and beauty, and maybe check out Felix Club Fes for a nightcap.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to explore Fes with my friends, sharing these incredible experiences together. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I'm also glad I didn't forget my camera today, unlike my portable charger and sunglasses which I really missed!
