Fez Unveiled: A Day of New Discoveries
Today was all about diving deeper into the historical layers of Fes. After spending the last few days lost in the enchanting maze of Fes el Bali, it was time to explore its equally fascinating neighbor, Fes el Jdid. With my friends in tow, I was eager to uncover the stories hidden within its walls and monuments.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Tarbouche. The aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air as we tucked into a traditional meal, fueling up for the day's adventures. The tagine de kebab was especially delicious, the veal tender and flavorful. It was the perfect start before delving into the wonders of Fes el Jdid.
Our first stop was Fes El Jdid itself, the 'new' city, which, ironically, dates back to the 13th century. It felt like stepping into a different era, away from the bustling chaos of the Medina. The wide streets and grand squares offered a sense of space and calm. The architecture here tells a different story, a blend of Moroccan and European influences that reflects the city's complex history.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives.
Next on our itinerary was the Borj Nord Museum, perched high on a hill overlooking the city. The climb was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic views were more than worth it. The museum itself is housed in a 16th-century fortress, originally built to protect the city. Inside, we explored an impressive collection of weaponry from around the world, spanning from prehistoric times to the 20th century. As someone who teaches English to people from all over the globe in Berlin, I found it particularly interesting to see the diverse origins of the arms on display. It was a stark reminder of the conflicts that have shaped our world, but also a testament to human ingenuity.

After immersing ourselves in military history, we made our way to the Nejjarine Fountain, a serene oasis in the heart of the Medina. The fountain is a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, adorned with intricate mosaics and carved wood. The air was filled with the soothing sound of water, a welcome respite from the bustling streets. It was a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and soak in the beauty of our surroundings. I couldn't help but think of Greta, who would have loved the intricate details and the peaceful ambiance.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Ouliya, enticed by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant is located in a beautifully renovated riad, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Mr. Rachid, and the staff were very attentive. I opted for a tagine, while my friends tried the couscous and pastilla. Each dish was a culinary delight, bursting with flavors and spices. It was a truly memorable meal, and I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Berlin for Greta.

In the afternoon, we indulged in some retail therapy at Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques. The shop was a treasure trove of beautiful rugs, textiles, and artifacts. The brothers Khalid and Abdul were incredibly helpful, sharing their knowledge of Berber culture and helping us find the perfect souvenirs. I ended up buying a small rug with intricate geometric patterns, a reminder of our time in Fes. I was particularly drawn to the Azillal rugs, which incorporate more geometric shapes and multiple colors of wool tainted with vegetables dyes. The experience was relaxed and enjoyable, and I appreciated that there was no pressure to buy.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Nur for dinner, a restaurant known for its modern take on Moroccan cuisine. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, a stark contrast to the traditional riads we had visited earlier in the day. The chef, Najat Kaanache, is known for her creative flair, and the menu was a culinary adventure. We opted for the tasting menu, a series of small plates that showcased the best of Moroccan ingredients with a contemporary twist. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a perfect ending to a day of exploration.
