Exploring the Cultural and Natural Wonders of Shikoku Island
Day 9: Wandering Through Vine Bridges and Valleys: A Day in Iya
Discover the hidden gems of Iya Valley, from ancient vine bridges to breathtaking views, on a day of cultural immersion and natural beauty.
Swinging Through History
Today was an adventure into the heart of Shikoku's Iya Valley, a place where time seems to slow down and nature reigns supreme. Hans and I set out early, eager to explore the famed vine bridges and stunning landscapes that this remote region has to offer. It felt like stepping back in time, trading the familiar comforts of Bonn for the raw, untamed beauty of rural Japan.
Our day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. It's always interesting to see how different cultures approach the first meal of the day. While I sometimes miss my simple Seychellois breakfasts of fresh fruit, I've grown to appreciate the variety and balance of a traditional Japanese breakfast. This morning, I enjoyed a mix of grilled fish, rice, miso soup, and a small salad, which provided the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, tried the natto (fermented soybeans) and, while he didn't quite acquire a taste for it, he certainly appreciated the experience.
With our stomachs full, we drove towards the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge, our first destination. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow mountain roads with lush greenery on either side. I couldn’t help but think of the winding roads of Mahé, back in Seychelles. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city.
Arriving at the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge, I was immediately struck by the ingenuity and history of the place. These bridges, crafted from twisting vines, were originally built centuries ago as a means of crossing the river. Walking across them was a thrilling experience, the bridges swaying gently with each step. It’s amazing to think that these bridges were once vital for transportation and survival in this remote valley. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the construction and the way the vines were interwoven to create a surprisingly sturdy structure.
The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge is not just a crossing; it's a passage through time, connecting us to the ingenuity and resilience of those who came before.

After thoroughly exploring the vine bridges and taking countless photos, we made our way to the Hinoji Valley - Iya River Bend Observation Point. This viewpoint offers a panoramic vista of the Iya River as it snakes its way through the valley, carving a path through the mountains. The view was simply breathtaking, the emerald-green waters contrasting beautifully with the verdant hills. It was a perfect spot to pause, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the sheer beauty of nature. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photograph could truly do justice to the real thing.

For lunch, we stopped at Tosa Rokkon, a local restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. We indulged in a delicious spread of sushi, sashimi, and tempura, all made with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I especially enjoyed the seasonal specialties that showcased the unique flavors of the region. Hans was particularly impressed with the sake selection, and he sampled a few different varieties with the help of the knowledgeable staff.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in Kochi, ready for dinner. We chose Hattorikun, an Italian restaurant that seemed a bit out of place in this rural setting, but came highly recommended. I opted for a pasta dish, while Hans chose a pizza. The food was surprisingly good, a testament to the chef's skill and dedication. It was a pleasant change of pace after a day of traditional Japanese experiences.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out tone dining bar, a local spot known for its cocktails and lively atmosphere. The bar had a stylish, modern décor, and the bartenders were true mixologists, crafting creative and delicious drinks. I enjoyed a fruity cocktail with a Seychellois twist, while Hans savored a classic whiskey sour. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, we're heading to the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway to witness the Naruto whirlpools, and then we'll explore the scenic Ōboke Gorge. I'm excited to see more of Shikoku's natural wonders and delve deeper into its rich cultural heritage.
This trip is becoming more special with each passing day, and I'm so glad to be sharing it with Hans. It's moments like these, exploring new places and cultures together, that make our bond even stronger. Shikoku Island is slowly revealing its secrets, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty and adventure. The memories of today, the vine bridges, the valley views, and the delicious food, will stay with me long after we leave this enchanting island.
It's funny how travel can sometimes bring you closer to home. Seeing the resourcefulness of the people who built those vine bridges reminded me of the way Seychellois people have always found innovative solutions to the challenges of island life. And the warmth and hospitality we encountered today echoed the welcoming spirit of my own culture. Perhaps that's why I feel so at ease here, so connected to this place, even though it's so far from everything I know. Travel, after all, is not just about seeing new places; it's about seeing yourself in new contexts, and discovering the common threads that connect us all.
Before I forget, I must mention my packing mishap! In all the excitement of preparing for this trip, I completely forgot to pack a portable phone charger and a travel adapter! It's a rookie mistake, I know, but thankfully, Hans came to the rescue with his trusty charger and a universal adapter [TripDetails]. It's a good reminder that even the most seasoned travelers can have their moments of forgetfulness. I'll be sure to add those items to my essentials list for future trips!
Good night from Shikoku Island!
