Embracing the Highlands: Our Kerlingarfjöll Adventure Begins

After months of planning, Jean-Pierre and I have finally arrived in the heart of Iceland's highlands. The air is crisp, the landscape dramatic, and the sense of adventure is palpable. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw beauty of Kerlingarfjöll, a place that promises a unique blend of geothermal activity and stunning natural vistas.

Our journey from Reykjavik was an adventure in itself, and the drive to Kerlingarfjöll was nothing short of spectacular. The landscape transformed from rolling green hills to stark, rocky terrain as we ventured deeper into the highlands. I must admit, I was a little nervous about the F35 road, but Jean-Pierre handled our trusty vehicle with ease, and the views were more than worth the slightly bumpy ride. It's a good thing we remembered to pack all of our essentials, although I'm kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger! Note to self: always double-check the packing list!

Gýgjarfoss: A Waterfall Welcome

Our first stop was Gýgjarfoss waterfall. It may not be the tallest waterfall in Iceland (about 5 meters high and 20 meters wide ), but it was so charming. It was easily accessible, which was great after our drive. The water source originates from the Hofsjökull glacier and the Kerlingarfjöll mountain ridge, giving it an impressive volume. I took several photos, trying to capture the way the water reflected the sky, while Jean-Pierre found a quiet spot to simply enjoy the view. It was a perfect start to our Icelandic adventure.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand landscapes, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature.

Exploring Hveravellir: A Geothermal Wonderland

Next on our itinerary was Hveravellir, a geothermal area nestled between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers. The drive was scenic, and as we approached, the landscape transformed into something otherworldly. Steam rose from the ground, and the air carried a faint scent of sulfur. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

Hveravellir is a nature reserve with hot springs, lava fields, and hiking trails. The geothermal area sits about 650 meters above sea level. We spent hours wandering around, marveling at the hot springs and fumaroles. The colors were incredible – vibrant blues, greens, and reds painted the landscape. We even saw some brave souls taking a dip in the natural hot spring. The water temperatures in the geothermal pool varies between 18 and 39 degrees Celsius. Although we didn't have time today, a soak in the pool is definitely on our list for a future visit.

We learned that Hveravellir has a rich history, with mentions in old sagas and folklore. It has been a popular resting place for travelers in the highlands for centuries. Apparently, outlaws Eyvindur and Halla once called this place home. It's easy to see why – the area feels both remote and welcoming, a true oasis in the highlands.

Dining at Ásgarður: A Taste of Iceland

For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we enjoyed the convenience of dining at Ásgarður (Kerlingarfjöll). It's the main base in Kerlingarfjöll and offers a welcome respite from the rugged landscape. The food was hearty and delicious, perfect for fueling our adventures. We even did some shopping there, picking up a few snacks for our camping trip tomorrow.

Camping Under the Icelandic Sky

As evening approached, we set up our campsite. October in Kerlingarfjöll means chilly temperatures, with averages around 32°F (0°C). We bundled up in our warmest clothes and prepared for a night under the stars. I forgot to pack an extra memory card for the camera, so I hope that the one I have will suffice!

The sky here is incredible. Far from any light pollution, the stars shone with an intensity I've rarely seen. Jean-Pierre pointed out a few constellations, and we simply lay there, wrapped in our sleeping bags, listening to the sounds of the highlands. It was a magical experience, one that reminded me why we embarked on this adventure in the first place.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we are heading to the Gullfoss Nature Reserve and Fossabrekkur. I'm particularly excited to see Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls. We'll also be stopping by the Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll for a drink in the bar. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this incredible landscape.

Before concluding, I wanted to share some tips for anyone planning a trip to Kerlingarfjöll in October. First, be prepared for all types of weather. Layers are essential, as temperatures can fluctuate dramatically. Second, make sure you have a reliable vehicle, especially if you plan on driving the F roads. A 4x4 is highly recommended. Finally, don't forget your camera! The landscapes here are simply breathtaking, and you'll want to capture every moment.

Kerlingarfjöll has already exceeded my expectations. The combination of geothermal wonders, stunning landscapes, and the sheer remoteness of the area makes it a truly unique destination. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I hope you'll join me again tomorrow as we continue our adventures in Iceland!
