Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco with Friends
Day 7: A Day of Discovery in Chefchaouen's Ancient Medina
Wandering through the blue-washed alleys of Chefchaouen's old city, discovering hidden gems and savoring local flavors with friends.
Lost in the Blue of Time
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Chefchaouen, a place where time seems to slow down and every corner holds a new discovery. It's funny, back in Heidelberg, I'm all about efficiency and schedules at the brewery, but here, I'm happily embracing the art of getting wonderfully lost.
Our day began, as most good days do, with breakfast. We headed to Bab Souk, a local spot just outside the medina. It’s more of a gate than a restaurant, but the area bustled with early morning activity. Bab Souk is a gate where the market is held twice a week. I grabbed a quick bite, soaking in the atmosphere before the day-trippers from Tangier arrived. The temperature in Chefchaouen in December typically ranges from 48°F and 64°F.
Fueled up, we ventured into the المدينة القديمة الاثرية (Old Medina), the ancient heart of Chefchaouen. The Medina is famous for its blue buildings. I swear, every shade of blue imaginable is represented here, from the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo. It’s a photographer’s dream, and I was in my element, snapping away at every doorway, archway, and winding alley. Even though I'm usually all about efficiency back home at the brewery, I found myself happily lost in the labyrinthine streets. The guys were patient with my constant stops, probably because they knew I'd buy them a beer later.

The Medina itself is a maze. We let our feet guide us, ducking into tiny shops selling everything from colorful spices to hand-woven carpets. I picked up a small leather pouch for Lena, hoping she’ll like the craftsmanship. It reminded me of the leather aprons some of the brewers wear, though hers will probably hold art supplies instead of tools.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its striking blue hues, but in the sense of peace and timelessness that permeates every corner of its ancient medina.
For lunch, we decided on Cafe Clock, a place recommended by several people. It’s a multi-level restaurant, and we snagged a spot on the rooftop terrace. The views were incredible, stretching out over the blue city and the surrounding Rif Mountains. I opted for a traditional Moroccan tagine, while a couple of the others tried the camel burger – apparently, it's a Cafe Clock specialty. I stuck with what I knew and wasn't disappointed. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of tourists and locals.

After lunch, we strolled towards Bab Chaouen, another of the city's iconic gates. It's not just a gate; it's a window into the soul of Chefchaouen. I could imagine caravans of traders passing through here centuries ago, bringing goods and stories from distant lands. The gate is located close to the center.

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn to Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for a pre-dinner drink. Perched on a terrace overlooking the main square, it was the perfect spot to unwind and watch the city come alive as the sun began to set. I ordered a local beer, and we all shared stories and laughs as the sky turned shades of orange and pink.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Restaurant Bar Chaouen. It had mixed reviews, but we were drawn in by the promise of live music. The atmosphere was lively, the food was decent, and the music was fantastic. It was a great way to end a day of exploring.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our last day in Chefchaouen, we’re planning a relaxed morning visiting Plaza Mohammed V and Derb Zaghdoud. We’ll grab breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream, have lunch at Restaurant Jbaria, and then enjoy a final dinner at Restaurant Hamsa. Before heading to the airport we will visit CHAOUEN GIFTS to get some souvenirs for our families. It’s hard to believe our time here is almost over. Chefchaouen has a way of capturing your heart, and I know I’ll be back someday.
But for now, it's time to head back to Hotel Casa Miguel and get some sleep. Tomorrow, we say goodbye to the Blue Pearl, but we’ll carry its colors and memories with us always.
