Day 7: Zen Gardens and Vegan Delights: A Day of Serenity and Discovery in Kyoto
Exploring the tranquil temples of Kyoto, indulging in vegan cuisine, and finding unique treasures at Kyoto LOFT. A perfect day of serenity!
Finding Peace in Kyoto's Temples & Vegan Treats
Today was a day of serene exploration and delightful culinary discoveries in Kyoto. From the tranquil rock gardens of Ryoan-ji to the innovative vegan cuisine at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, every moment was a unique experience that added another layer to my understanding of this captivating city. It's amazing how much peace and inspiration one can find simply by wandering and being open to new experiences.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mezopotamia Kebab House. Yes, you read that right! Kebab for breakfast might seem unusual in Kyoto, but I was looking for something quick and satisfying before diving into a day of temple visits. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a diverse culinary offering so early in the morning, and the kebab was delicious and gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead.
My first stop was Ryoan-ji Temple. As someone who appreciates the simple beauty of things, I was excited to see its famous Zen garden. Stepping into the temple grounds felt like entering a different world. The air was still and quiet, a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside. The main attraction, of course, was the karesansui, the dry landscape rock garden. Fifteen rocks of varying sizes are arranged in five groups on a bed of white gravel. The gravel is meticulously raked each day by the monks, creating linear patterns that are both calming and mesmerizing. What struck me most was the garden's simplicity. There are no trees, no flowers, just rocks and gravel. Yet, within this simplicity, there is a profound sense of depth and complexity. I sat on the wooden veranda, gazing at the garden, trying to decipher its meaning. Some say the rocks represent islands in the sea, others say they represent mountains rising above the clouds. Whatever the interpretation, the garden invites contemplation and introspection. I found myself lost in thought, my mind slowly emptying of its worries and anxieties. It was a truly meditative experience.

The essence of Zen lies not in grand gestures, but in the quiet contemplation of simple beauty.
Next on my list was Ninna-ji Temple. Founded in AD 888 by Emperor Uda, and later reconstructed in the 17th century, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As I approached the temple, I was struck by its grandeur. The main hall, or Golden Hall, is an impressive structure with a soaring roof and intricate carvings. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of incense, and the soft glow of lanterns illuminated the gilded statues of Buddha. I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the five-story pagoda and the beautiful walled garden. Although it's February, I learned that Ninna-ji is particularly famous for its Omuro Sakura cherry trees, which bloom later than other varieties, typically around mid-April. I made a mental note to try and visit again during cherry blossom season to witness this spectacle.

After immersing myself in the serene atmosphere of Ninna-ji, I made my way to Daitoku-ji Temple. This temple complex is one of the largest in Kyoto and is known for its numerous sub-temples, each with its own unique character and history. I explored a few of these sub-temples, admiring the traditional architecture and the meticulously maintained gardens. Daitoku-ji has a deep connection with the tea ceremony culture, and I could feel the influence of Zen Buddhism in every corner of the complex. The temple exuded a sense of peace and tranquility, and I found myself slowing down, taking my time to appreciate the beauty and history that surrounded me.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Nakamura, a Michelin three-star restaurant renowned for its Kyoto cuisine. This was a culinary experience I had been eagerly anticipating, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is a beautiful traditional building, with tatami mats and sliding doors. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, yet also warm and welcoming. I was led to a private room overlooking a small garden, and the meal began. Each course was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures. The chef used only the freshest, seasonal ingredients, and every dish was presented with meticulous care. I savored each bite, marveling at the skill and artistry that went into creating such exquisite cuisine. It was more than just a meal; it was a journey through the culinary traditions of Kyoto.

After such an elaborate lunch, I decided to explore Kyoto LOFT for some shopping. This multi-story store is a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. I spent hours browsing through the various departments, admiring the innovative home goods, trendy stationery, and fashionable accessories. I even picked up a few souvenirs for Anjali and Arjun back home in Leipzig. It was a fun and lighthearted way to spend the afternoon, and I enjoyed seeing the creativity and ingenuity of Japanese designers.

As evening approached, I headed to AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO for dinner. This vegan restaurant had been recommended to me by a friend back in Leipzig, and I was curious to try it out. As someone who enjoys exploring different cuisines, I am always open to trying new things, and I was intrigued by the idea of vegan Japanese food. The restaurant is located in a quiet backstreet of Kawaramachi, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I ordered a few dishes, including the Heavenly Vegan Pancakes and the ripple burger. The food was surprisingly delicious. The flavors were bold and satisfying, and I was impressed by the creativity of the chef in using plant-based ingredients to create such flavorful dishes. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I left feeling satisfied and inspired.

It’s fascinating to see how traditional spaces can house modern culinary experiences. The AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO is located on Daini Kyogoku Street in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, in a building that has a rich history. During the Edo period, this area was part of a temple called Kankiko-ji. It’s said that raccoon dogs lived in the bamboo grove of Odoi built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The building that houses AIN SOPH. Journey Kyoto is actually the former Maruni Shokudo, which took over Shichibei Myojin to protect it from air raids during the war. Shichibei is still enshrined in the restaurant, adding a unique historical layer to the dining experience.
Reflecting on the day, I realize how much Kyoto has to offer. From the serene temples and gardens to the innovative cuisine and vibrant shopping scene, there is something for everyone in this city. It is a place where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience its beauty and culture. I am also grateful for the chance to share my experiences with you, my readers, and I hope that my words inspire you to visit Kyoto and discover its wonders for yourself.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and Tōji Temple. I am particularly excited about visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up a mountainside. It promises to be another day filled with cultural immersion and unforgettable experiences.
Until then, sayōnara!
