Day 8: Sake, Shrines, and Serenity: A Day of Kyoto's Cultural Depths
Exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures: Sake tasting, vibrant shrines, and peaceful temples offer a day of immersive experiences.
Kyoto's Brews and Sacred Spaces
Today was a deep dive into the cultural heart of Kyoto, a day of sensory exploration that touched on the city's revered traditions and spiritual havens. It was a journey that awakened my senses and deepened my appreciation for this captivating city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. I ventured into this small izakaya, drawn by its reputation for amazing vegan options. The owner, a bubbly and kind woman, welcomed me warmly, and I opted for the vegan set menu. What followed was an explosion of flavors and textures, a testament to her passion for cooking. Each of the ten creative dishes was a surprise, a unique blend of local ingredients prepared in authentic Kyoto style. I especially enjoyed the kiwi inari, a super unique and delicious creation. The cozy atmosphere and the chef's engaging conversation made it a truly memorable experience. It reminded me of the small family-run restaurants back in Gorkha, where the warmth of the hosts is as important as the food itself.

The soul of a place is often found in its most cherished traditions.
With a satisfied stomach and a spring in my step, I set off to Fushimi Inari Taisha. The train ride was quick, and soon I was standing before the iconic vermilion torii gates. The sight was breathtaking – thousands of vibrant red gates winding up the mountain, creating a seemingly endless tunnel of color. As I began my ascent, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of awe and wonder. The higher I climbed, the fewer people I encountered, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the serene atmosphere. The hike was invigorating, a welcome contrast to the bustling city. I paused frequently to admire the intricate details of the gates, each one bearing the inscription of a Japanese company that had sponsored its construction. The experience was both spiritual and physical, a journey of self-reflection amidst the beauty of nature. It reminded me of the mountain trails in Nepal, where every step brings you closer to the divine.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, I made my way to the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum, eager to learn more about Japan's national beverage. The museum is housed in a renovated wooden brewery dating back to 1909, and it exudes a sense of history and tradition. The exhibits detailed the history of sake, its varieties, and the intricate brewing process. I was fascinated by the traditional equipment on display, from the wooden buckets to the cedar fermentation tanks. The highlight of the visit was, of course, the sake tasting. I sampled three different types of sake, each with its own distinct flavor profile. The tastings included small food pairings, which enhanced the experience. The guide was informative and personable, making the tour both educational and enjoyable. It was interesting to learn that Gekkeikan has been a leader in sake brewing since its establishment in 1637. The museum gave me a deeper appreciation for the art and science of sake making.

My final stop of the day was Tōji Temple, also known as Kyo-o-Gokokuji Temple. Founded in 796, it is one of Kyoto's oldest and most historically significant temples. As I approached the temple grounds, the towering five-story pagoda came into view. It is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan and a symbol of Kyoto. I strolled through the serene gardens, admiring the ancient trees and the meticulously manicured landscapes. Inside the Kondo Hall, I was awestruck by the statues of the Yakushi Triad, each one exuding a sense of power and compassion. The temple's history is intertwined with the monk Kukai, who established Shingon Esotericism here in the 9th century. Tōji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese Buddhism.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Oryori Menami, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded restaurant specializing in obanzai, Kyoto-style home cooking. This restaurant, with over 80 years of history, is now run by the grandson of the founder. The cozy ambiance and the warm hospitality of the staff made me feel right at home. I ordered the Obanzai Assortment, a beautifully presented selection of daily specials showcasing a range of Kyoto flavors. Each dish was a delicate balance of flavors and textures, highlighting the freshness of the local ingredients. The restaurant also offered a single sake, sourced from a historic Hiroshima brewery, which paired perfectly with the meal. It was a comforting and satisfying end to a day of cultural exploration.

Before heading back to The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, I decided to experience Kyoto’s nightlife by stopping at Bar K6. Tucked away, it was a cozy, sophisticated spot. I ordered a glass of Yamazaki 12-year, and the bartender prepared it with precision. Sipping the whisky, I reflected on the day's adventures. The bar had a great atmosphere. It was a perfect way to unwind and enjoy the evening. It reminded me of some of the quieter bars in Leipzig, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a moment of peace.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kenninji Temple, Sanjūsangendō Temple, and Higashiyama Jisho-ji. I am also hoping to visit the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store for some souvenirs. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this enchanting city. The blend of ancient traditions and modern life is truly captivating, and I am eager to experience even more of Kyoto's unique charm.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about immersing oneself in the local culture and traditions. From the sake breweries to the ancient temples, Kyoto offers a wealth of experiences that can enrich the mind and nourish the soul. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and share my experiences with you.
