Believed to have been founded by Alexander the Great in 330 BC, the citadel has been a silent witness to the rise and fall of empires, serving as a military garrison, a seat of power, and even a prison [4, 9, 10]. Discover more about Herat Citadel

The Citadel of Herat, or Arg-e Herat, is a magnificent fortress located in the heart of Herat, Afghanistan [4]. Its origins trace back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in the region [4, 8, 10]. Over the past two millennia, numerous empires have utilized the fort as their headquarters, resulting in its repeated destruction and reconstruction [4]. The citadel's architecture showcases the artistry of the Timurid period, featuring towering walls, imposing towers, and expansive courtyards constructed from baked bricks and stone [5]. The design provided a robust defense against enemy attacks [5]. In 1415, Shah Rukh of the Timurid dynasty largely rebuilt the current structure [8, 9]. The exterior was adorned with Kufic script proclaiming the castle's grandeur, though sadly, only a fragment of this tiling remains on the northwest wall, known as the 'Timurid Tower' [9]. Despite its storied past, the citadel faced potential demolition in 1953 when a local army commander sought to relocate his military base. Fortunately, King Zahir Shah intervened to prevent its destruction [9]. However, subsequent neglect led to the collapse of several sections. In the 1970s, an extensive renovation project was launched but was interrupted by the Soviet invasion [9]. A more recent restoration took place between 2006 and 2011, involving Afghan craftsmen and funding from international organizations [4]. Visitors today can explore the upper enclosure, the most heavily fortified section, complete with its own wells for withstanding sieges [9]. Archaeological excavations continue in the main courtyard, and a small hammam reveals beautifully painted walls [9]. The citadel's curtain walls offer panoramic views of Herat, including Chahar Su to the south and the Musalla Complex minarets to the north [9, 11].
