Discover more about Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), designated in 1986, encompasses over 9,000 acres of protected estuarine habitats where the fresh waters of the Fish and Magnolia Rivers meet the saline waters of Mobile Bay [4, 6, 10, 13, 15]. This convergence creates a dynamic environment that supports a remarkable array of plant and animal life [10]. The Reserve serves as a living laboratory for long-term scientific research and estuarine education [7, 15]. The Weeks Bay Interpretive Center offers opportunities to learn about coastal habitats through exhibits, live animal displays, and collections of regional plants and animals [6, 7, 10]. See snakes, fish, hermit crabs, and even a baby alligator [2, 10, 12]. Explore the outdoors via self-guiding nature trails that wind through wetlands, marshes, bogs, and forests [6, 10]. The boardwalk trail is wheelchair accessible and mostly shaded [2]. The easy dirt trail is roughly three-quarters of a mile long, with tree and plant markers set up along the way [2]. Weeks Bay is a critical nursery for shrimp, bay anchovy, blue crab and multitudes of other fish, crustaceans and shellfish [6]. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the abundance of avian life [10]. Weeks Bay NERR is managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Estuarine Research Reserve System [4, 13].
