Getting There

  • Driving

    Weeks Bay Reserve is located on US Highway 98, between Fairhope and Foley, Alabama. From I-10, take Exit 38 (Malbis/AL-181) and head south on AL-181 for approximately 16.8 miles. Turn left onto US-98 and drive 0.9 miles to the reserve entrance on the right. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited parking may be available at the Weeks Bay Resource Center, located west of the US-98 bridge, underneath the bridge.

    If you are staying in accommodations along US Highway 98 near Weeks Bay, walking or biking to the reserve is a good option. From the intersection of US-98 and County Road 44, the visitor center is approximately 1.5 miles to the east. Please exercise caution as you walk or bike along the highway.

Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) is a living laboratory where the Fish and Magnolia Rivers meet Mobile Bay, creating a rich estuarine environment. Established in 1986, the reserve's 9,317 acres are managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in partnership with NOAA. The reserve plays a vital role in long-term scientific research, water-quality monitoring, education, and coastal stewardship. The Weeks Bay Reserve protects a diverse range of habitats, including tidal and forested wetlands, pitcher plant bogs, and submerged aquatic vegetation. These habitats support a variety of plant and animal life, including numerous fish species and almost 350 species of birds. Visitors can explore the area via self-guiding nature trails, including a boardwalk that leads to an observation platform overlooking Weeks Bay. The Kurt G. Wintermeyer Nature Trail provides access to the unique pitcher plant bog habitat. The Weeks Bay Visitor Center offers exhibits, live animal displays, and collections of local flora and fauna. Here, guests can learn about the history of Weeks Bay and environmental concerns. The Arthur C. “Skipper” Tonsmeire Weeks Bay Resource Center, located at the opening of Fish River, features a pavilion, boardwalk, and pier.
