Getting There

  • Driving

    Weeks Bay Reserve is located on US Highway 98, conveniently between Fairhope and Foley, Alabama. From Fairhope, travel east on US-98; the entrance to the Visitor Center will be on the right. If you reach the Fish River Bridge, you've gone too far. There is a designated parking area available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is free.

  • Public Transport

    While public transportation directly to Weeks Bay NERR is limited, you can take a Baldwin County Connector bus to a nearby location on US Highway 98 and then walk or take a short taxi or ride-share to the reserve. Check the Baldwin County Connector schedule for routes and times. A single ride fare is $2.

Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, established in 1986, encompasses over 9,000 acres of protected lands and waters where the Fish and Magnolia Rivers meet Mobile Bay. This unique environment serves as a living laboratory for scientific research and estuarine education. Visitors can explore a variety of habitats, including tidal wetlands, salt marshes, aquatic grass beds, and upland forests. The Ottilie Halstead Visitors Center features exhibits, live animal displays, and collections of regional plants and animals. A boardwalk trail meanders through the marsh, leading to an observation platform with views of Weeks Bay. Nature trails offer further exploration of the Reserve's diverse ecosystems. The Arthur C. “Skipper” Tonsmeire Weeks Bay Resource Center, located at the mouth of Fish River, provides additional access to the water with a pavilion, boardwalk, and pier. Weeks Bay is a stop on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, offering opportunities to spot a variety of bird species. The Reserve plays a vital role in protecting the estuary and its inhabitants, including numerous fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. It's also home to unique bog habitats with rare plant species.
