Discover more about Huntsville Depot Museum

The Huntsville Depot Museum, situated on a seven-acre site in downtown Huntsville, stands as Alabama's oldest surviving railroad depot and one of the oldest in the United States. Completed in 1860, the three-story brick structure originally served as the eastern division headquarters for the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. During the Civil War, the depot was captured by Union forces in 1862 and used as a temporary prison for Confederate soldiers. Visitors can still see graffiti left by these prisoners etched into the walls, providing a tangible connection to this tumultuous period in American history. Following the Civil War, the depot continued to operate as a passenger station, playing a vital role in connecting communities. In April 1950, Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists arrived in Huntsville at the Depot, marking the beginning of the city's transformation into a hub for aerospace innovation. Passenger service continued until 1968. The museum complex includes the historic depot, a reconstructed roundhouse (available for event rentals), and several outbuildings with exhibits. Though the 1856 Freight Depot was destroyed by fire in 2004, the site continues to preserve and interpret Huntsville's rich transportation history.
