The Huntsville Botanical Garden, a verdant escape in the heart of Huntsville, Alabama, spans 112 acres and offers a diverse range of natural environments to explore. Since opening in May 1988, the garden has grown into a cherished community asset, attracting over 350,000 visitors annually. The garden features a variety of themed areas, including aquatic, annual, daylily, fern, herb, perennial, rose, and wildflower gardens. The Nature Center overlooks Little Smith Lake and houses the seasonal Purdy Butterfly House, the nation's largest open-air butterfly house. Visitors can stroll along nature trails, admire native Alabama plants, and explore the Children's Garden, which includes a wading pool, dinosaur exhibits, and a Storybook Garden. The garden also showcases twenty Classical Doric columns from the 1914 Madison County Courthouse, arranged at the entrance and gate. Throughout the year, the garden hosts events, exhibits, and programs, including the Galaxy of Lights, Spring Festival, and scarecrow trails. The Boeing-Toyota Amphitheater hosts outdoor performances, adding a cultural dimension to the garden. The Huntsville Botanical Garden began with a vision in 1979 by fourteen people. The Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Garden Society was founded in January 1980, and after persistent efforts, the City Council granted them 35 acres of land. The garden is operated by the Society under an agreement with the City as a non-profit organization.
