    From downtown Chattanooga, the CARTA route 1 bus provides service to the Incline Railway. The bus ride takes approximately 26 minutes and costs $2. Get off at the Food City-1-0 stop, which is a short walk to the Incline's St. Elmo Station.

  • Walking

    From the St. Elmo neighborhood, the Incline Railway is easily accessible by foot. Follow St. Elmo Avenue to the Incline Railway. The lower station is located at 3917 St. Elmo Avenue. Allow approximately 15-20 minutes to walk from the heart of St. Elmo to the Incline Railway.

  • Driving

    From downtown Chattanooga, take Broad Street south to St. Elmo Avenue. Follow St. Elmo Avenue to the Incline Railway. Parking is available at the St. Elmo station for $3 for 3 hours or $5 for over 3 hours. Metered parking is available at the top station. Limited EV charging is available for $1/hour for the first 8 hours, then $2/hour.

The railway climbs Lookout Mountain from Chattanooga's historic St. Elmo neighborhood. As the cars ascend, passengers are treated to panoramic views of the city and the Tennessee River. The railway's maximum grade of 72.7% makes it one of the steepest passenger railways in the world, offering a unique and exciting experience. At the top, visitors can explore Point Park, a ten-acre memorial park with Civil War monuments and scenic overlooks. The Battles for Chattanooga Museum is also nearby, offering a digital projection map of the battle above the clouds. The Lookout Mountain station itself has an observation deck, snack bar, and gift shop. The Incline Railway has overcome numerous challenges throughout its history, including fires and a recent wildfire in December 2024 that caused significant damage. The railway is currently undergoing reconstruction with a targeted reopening in Summer 2025.
