Colonial Fort Condé: A Portal to Mobile's Past

Colonial Fort Condé, located in the heart of Mobile, Alabama, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's multifaceted colonial past. Originally built by the French in 1723, the fort was first named Fort Louis, then later renamed Fort Condé. Throughout its history, it changed hands among the French, British (as Fort Charlotte), and Spanish (as Fuerta Carlota) before finally becoming part of the United States. The reconstructed fort represents about one-third of the original structure at four-fifths scale. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing artifacts from Native Americans and European colonists, providing insights into the lives and times of early Mobile. Remnants of the original fort, discovered during the construction of the Wallace Tunnel in 1966, can be seen in Mardi Gras Park.
