The Ruins of the Second Fort Condé offer a tangible connection to Mobile's colonial history. Constructed by the French in 1723, the fort was a vital strategic point, guarding Mobile Bay and the easternmost part of the Louisiana colony. Originally named Fort Louis, it was later renamed Fort Condé in honor of Louis XIV's brother. The fort's design, typical of European fortifications, featured high walls, bastions, and a surrounding moat. It covered a substantial area, encompassing several city blocks. Over the years, Fort Condé witnessed numerous changes in ownership. In 1763, it was ceded to Great Britain and renamed Fort Charlotte. During the American Revolutionary War, Spain regained control, renaming it Fuerta Carlota. In 1813, American forces captured Mobile, and the fort became an American possession. By the 1820s, the fort was deemed obsolete, and its demolition was authorized to make way for the city's expansion. Today, the ruins serve as a reminder of Mobile's strategic importance and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the foundations and partial walls, with historical markers providing context.
