The Alabama State Black Archives Research Center and Museum, found within the James H. Wilson Building at Alabama A&M University, serves as a cultural center and repository dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the rich history and culture of African Americans in Alabama. The archives and museum were established in 1987 by Dr. George Grayson, a former State Representative and Alabama A&M University professor. Since then, it has become a valuable resource for researchers, students, and the general public interested in exploring the African American experience in the state. The museum's exhibits highlight different facets of African American life in Alabama, including history, art, and culture. The archives' holdings date back to the founding of Alabama and include manuscript collections, books, periodicals, films, photos, and audiovisual material. The Velma A. Walker Gallery, located on the top floor, showcases art donated by the alumna and avid art collector of the same name. Alabama A&M University itself has a rich history, founded in 1875 by Dr. William Hooper Councill, a formerly enslaved person. Originally named the Huntsville Normal School, the institution's mission was to train teachers for Black children. Over time, the school expanded its focus to include industrial, agricultural, and mechanical training, eventually becoming Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1969. The James H. Wilson Building, where the museum is housed, is one of the oldest buildings on the Alabama A&M campus. Formerly the Councill Domestic Science Building, it was renovated and named in honor of longtime Alabama A&M University administrator James H. Wilson Sr. in 1990. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
